Continued from Part I of this thread, which can be found here :

First look at Air India's 787-8s

http://airlinersindia.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=10221&start=360

Folks, may I once again request that we stick to the debut of the Air India 787s in this thread. Thanks.

The second Charleston built 787, VT-ANJ, had her first flight today (9/12/12); and a relatively short one - from Charleston, SC to Jacksonville, FL.
VT-ANJ had the engine issue on 7/29 during preflight runway testing.

Meanwhile, delivery of the second 787 to Air India (VT-AND) seems to have been pushed back, and will not happen this weekend.

It is also official now (well, for now at least) - the 787s will NOT be named.

Oh please! How can you still be so naďve ? You should know by now that means nothing.

I actually thought of doing that, though wasn't convinced it would fly with the majority. Rolling Eyes

Does anyone know when the second one is going to be delivered, and where it will fly to?

There is no specific date, though it is expected to arrive next week.

The routes for AND are expected to be the same as for ANH.

Neither the possible triangular AI 439 routing DEL-MAA-HYD-DEL `scheduled' for 19 Sep, nor the DEL-CCU for 22 Sep are available for booking on the Air India site on the 787 - the routes still show the Airbii operating - since yesterday. Am I missing something here?
Cheers, Sumantra.

Guess it was someone else - it's back to what I had it originally, though.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand.

VT-ANH arrived at BOM today (9/13) to a water cannon salute (yes, yet again), with top AI brass to finanlize bridge financing for the 787s (apparently this is gonna be done in Bombay).

Hi Sumantra - My guess is that AI 403 from DEL - BLR arriving BLR at 19:10 and the return to DEL will be the 787 flight. this is the only one on the site for that day which is not showing an assigned aircraft type yet.

When Air India Ltd. invited the media to see its first Dreamliner jet in Mumbai on Thursday it had one request: take off your shoes before boarding.

“It is like a Mandir [temple] for us… we should worship it,” an Air India executive told journalists gathered there. He explained he didn’t want them to “spoil the new carpets inside the aircraft.”

Journalists had to leave their shoes on the tarmac before being allowed on Boeing’s 787-800 aircraft, which was covered in marigold garlands, an adornment typical of temples in India. Once they reached the plane, journalists weren’t allowed to sit on business class seats – not even to take pictures.

Shoes piled outside Air India’s Dreamliner jet during its unveiling ceremony in Mumbai, Thursday.

Yes, as of today (14 Sep), both the AI 439 DEL-MAA-HYD-DEL and AI 403 DEL-BLR and AI 404 BLR-DEL have the delicious `unassigned aircraft' type, indicating the 787. However, 22 Sep DEL-CCU has not seen a change as yet.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Hmm...Economy is row 11 to row 39. Rohit: where would the overwing seats be (the seat rows), and which would be the ones with a nice view outside, unimpeded by the huge wing? I also note that rows 39 have two seats each, on the sides - how nice are these seats? Do they recline? Do they have a nice view outside? How much is the proximity to the window affected by the curvature of the aircraft?
Thanks, Sumantra.

Oh, well. Typical. I guess this 787 is like a new bride in some heinous part of the cow belt states. She's treated like royalty on the day of her wedding (or at least until the moolah she brings is pocketed away) and then abused by everyone for the rest of her life.

In less than a year, the IFE will be in tatters, and those poor windows will only have one setting left operational.

Ha ha! Interesting parallel here, but what I have seen of the AI maintenance of the plane insides over the past half-a-decade or so, I wouldn't think that would be the case. Of course, one never knows...

These are questions which Devesh can probably answer better - I've only been on an AI 787 once, and that was a very brief visit...

VT-ANH is scheduled to depart BOM (late) Sat evening or Sun morning IST, after a day of cabin crew familiarization.

...further questions on the AI 787:
I wonder why the AI 787 seats are numbered ABC-DEF-GHJ, and not A-K, as in the AI 777s, or the 332s. The starboard seat is always a `K' on the 777s or the 332s. Further, row 39 (the bunch of twin seats are AB and HJ), so officially at least, A and J are window seats. From what I have heard, they are not too close to the windows. On the 332s at least, the part where the plane body curves in (and also goes up), the windows are not that far from the seat, from what I have seen.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Sumantra I suggest you see my video walk through of the cabin. Might give you an idea. I think the wings start from around row 18 or so.

According to Boeing SC, the engines on the SC built 787s (VT-ANI/J/K) are to be tested regularly to make sure no cracks have formed.
This will affect AI's delivery schedule (though VT-ANJ & VT-ANK are not yet delivery ready).
The only SC built delivery ready 787 (VT-ANI) will not be delivered anytime soon.
Everett built VT-AND's delivery is almost certain to be pushed back indefinitely as well.

No, Devesh-ji, the wing starts from around row 13. 11 and 12 may still be fine. I was wondering as to where it `ends', and whether the rearward seats actually enable one to get a good view. I have seen your video a long time back, on your website, just after you posted it Smile There are links to it from all over the Internet.

Sad to see AI giving BOM the miss for the 787 proving flights... Would have been awesome to be on one of the first flights. I hope they start the 787 on some routes from BOM. BOM should easily support loads of 238 seats to both EU and to Far east apart from Middle East region.

Anyone one what the first int'l flights will be post the proving flights and crew acclimatization on domestic flights?
