DEL-HKG and BOM-LHR were being bandied about. But no one knows for sure.

No, Devesh-ji, the wing starts from around row 13. 11 and 12 may still be fine. I was wondering as to where it `ends', and whether the rearward seats actually enable one to get a good view. I have seen your video a long time back, on your website, just after you posted it Smile There are links to it from all over the Internet.
Cheers, Sumantra.
Sumantraji, thanks for the vote of confidence. You have the more updated info. If I remember correctly, the wing root stretched all the way to the end of the first section (Row 28 as per seat map). So the rear section (Row 30 onwards) will again afford you a good view.

I have put a high res view from the wing in this story http://www.bangaloreaviation.com/2012/09/air-india-boeing-787-dreamliner.html so just click on the pic and in the slide show you can right-click and download the picture.

It would be fun if AI started LHR quickly and generally rained on Mr. Al Bakar's grandiose plans to be the first carrier with a 788 in to LHR.

Thanks for the kind compliments. I pointed to the picture since it shows the wing root all the way to the end of the front economy class section.

VT-AND is enroute to Delhi, will arrive around 1700 local on Wednesday.

GE has put out an advisory that they have come to the root cause of the problem, and steps taken to counter this issue will be announced shortly.

Air India's second 787 VT-AND was delivered at the Charleston delivery center this morning ( 09/18 ).

VT-AND leaves CHS for the last time, on her way home.

This evening there are three (all SC built) 787s on the CHS flightline (VT-ANI/ANJ/ANK). ANJ & ANK are still unpainted.

Flightaware has AI 170 VT-AND well enroute to FRA, and arriving shortly. so not sure what was showing on FlightRadar24.

Air India's first revenue 787 flight is on it's way from DEL to MAA.

Onboard is a former, and arguably most well known & well informed member of Airliners-India. Old timers here will know who I'm talking about.

kcm?

Well whoever it is, they're very lucky indeed. I won't get a trip on the AI 787 until December when I come back home... Had to compromise and book on UA instead Sad

huh... Both flightaware and flightradar show that AIC170 sharply turned back and then returned to course a bit past Newfoundland. Very strange.

An interesting question to be asked of the delivery captain for sure...

Today's loads on the inaugural 787 run :

AI439 DEL – MAA : 118 pax
AI430 MAA – DEL : 92 pax

(And yes, there was yet another water cannon salute & puja performed at MAA).

The second run of the day, AI403 DEL – BLR had to return to the gate while taxiing at DEL, due to "cooling system failure". The flight was delayed by an hour.

It's nothing surprising, just the aircraft equivalent of teething troubles.

The 787 is a new launch and AI have managed to get hold of one of the earlier frames; minor snags like these are to be expected. Have you forgotten the "overweight" batch of 346s delivered to VS early on? Or was it Iberia?

Not to mention AI themselves have been a victim of this not more than five years ago, when the altimeters of the 2 77Ls in the fleet - ALA and ALC stopped functioning thus delaying the BOM-JFK run by a good eight hours or so.

Stuff happens early on with new aircraft, that's just the way they roll.

VT-AND has now arrived in Delhi.

VT-ANI is up next; and according to Boeing SC GM Jack Jones today, the first SC built 787 will be delivered to Air India next week.

I think they need to deploy this in its bread and butter DEL-BOM-DEL routes where the yields and loads are better...No way with such loads are they going to make any money with this...

Any clue what VT-AND is gonna do?

BLR loads were similarly low - a bunch of us went yesterday to watch it arriving - it finally landed at about 8:50 pm, and it seems departed much much later.

http://www.deccanherald.com/content/279890/nivedita-bhasin-becomes-first-woman.html

Nivedita Bhasin becomes first woman B-787 Dreamliner pilot

Sep 20, 2012

Senior Air India pilot Capt Nivedita Bhasin has become the first woman to command the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner which landed in New Delhi Wednesday, an airline official said.

Bhasin, 50, brought the sleek new Dreamliner aircraft (VT-AND), the second to be inducted by Air India, from US' Charleston to the Indian capital, as the only trained woman pilot in the world for the B-787.

Incidentally, Bhasin, who joined the erstwhile Indian Airlines, now merged into a common entity Air India, in 1984, had created world aviation history by commanding a commercial jetliner at the age of 26 on Jan 1, 1990, on the Mumbai-Aurangabad-Udaipur sector.

While the first B-787 arrived in India Sep 8 and the second Wednesday, the third B-787 is expected to arrive in India by the month-end while five more are likely to join Air India fleet by the end of this year.

Air India launched its first commercial service Wednesday with the B-787 flying between New Delhi-Chennai and then it was deployed on the Delhi-Bangalore route.

The carrier will receive a total 27 B-787s -- advanced, fuel efficient and eco-friendly aircraft capable of flying up to 16,000 kms non-stop -- over the next five years.

Nivedita lives with her husband, Capt Rohit Bhasin, and their two children in New Delhi.

It makes sense for AI to run these machines on BLR/BOM routes where there is substantial yield

Air India 787 develops technical snag

21-Sep-12 9:54 AM
Air India's new Boeing 787 reportedly developed a technical issue on the first day of commercial operations on 19-Sep-2012, with a cooling unit malfunctioning when the aircraft was being pushed back (TNN, 20-Sep-2012). The issue resulted in a flight delay of around 40 minutes on the affected service, which was to operate from New Delhi to Bangalore. Reports indicate the same part had already been replaced twice prior to delivery for the carrier.

So I'd asked my brother in law to book himself on AI 404 BLR-DEL for yesterday -21-Sep - extolling the virtues of the 787 and assuring him he was in for an or....ic experience.

He booked himself on that flight, and now tells me that he got a call in the day telling him the a/c type has been changed to a 77L due to "excessive loads for the evening BLR-DEL sector". And yes - it was a 77L that operated yesterday's AI 403/404 routing - I called the call center to confirm that it wasn't my BIL getting confused. And he said the a/c was packed to capacity, not a single free seat in Economy.

What gives? I'm pretty sure the capacity of the 77L and the 787 is similar. Is the 787 facing further issues - either hardware or crew scheduling?

AI's 77Ls have 238 seats, their 787s have 254 seats. Idiots.

If this is for real, then it's truly impressive! But the poor pax who booked the heavily advertised flight for the 787 experience were left dejected.
