AI may fly Dreamliner to San Francisco

Ajit Singh, civil aviation minister, told Business Standard, “We are considering going to San Francisco through the West Coast. We are weighing the option of a direct flight or we can use the Dreamliner to go via Singapore.”

I don't see this even a point of discussion.

A sound byte taken from Ajit Singh that AI is considering a destination and there you go ..... a full article on that.

AIs B788s cannot even do a SIN - SFO non stop without a significant payload restriction.

Why oh why consider this via SIN? A whole +43.1% extra distance, an extra stop and completely senseless routing? Perhaps ICN (+11%) or NRT/KIX (+14%) or even HKG (+20%) still makes sense, but SIN?

Code:

From        To        Initial Heading        Distance
DEL (28°34'07"N 77°06'44"E)   SFO (37°37'09"N 122°22'31"W)   16.4°    (N)    7706 mi
2 segment path:                                                              11026 mi   (+43.1%)
    DEL (28°34'07"N 77°06'44"E)   SIN (1°21'01"N 103°59'40"E)   131.7°    (SE)    2579 mi
    SIN (1°21'01"N 103°59'40"E)   SFO (37°37'09"N 122°22'31"W)   42.6°    (NE)    8446 mi
Total:         18732 mi

OTOH - a non-stop DEL-SFO is exactly what AI needs to stay relevant. Tie up with UA or AA at SFO to provide west coast regional connections, and time the DEL dept/arrival so you're able to connect to BLR/HYD/MAA etc. with not more than a 2 hour layover in DEL in both directions.

AI can extend any of the existing eastern routes like ICN and NRT onwards to SFO, LAX etc similar to what SQ does from SIN. The same 777W/L can go onwards to SFO/LAX.

VT-ANL returned to CHS today ( 11/18 ) in full Air India colors.

There are once again 4 AI 788s on the Charleston flightline:
VT-ANJ (2nd SC built), Painted
VT-ANK (3rd SC built), Painted
VT-ANL (4th SC built), Painted
VT-ANM (5th SC built), Unpainted

VT-ANJ might be delivered this coming week (but don't hold your breath).

According to Air India, DEL-LHR on the 787 starts next week.
A certain news agency has reported it as BOM-LHR. AI says it is DEL-LHR, with no planned 787 ops ex-BOM for the moment.

Next 787 destination planned is CDG, as of now.

Yet they've got ads all over Bombay saying fly the 787 between Delhi and Bangalore and Dubai. Idiots.

The new 787 is not in as yet, so which domestic 787 route will be axed? Or will this route start after the new 787 comes in (when it was supposed to be BOM-LHR, as per the grape{w/v}ine some time back)? Consolidation of 787 ops at DEL till more come in, may not be a bad idea, after all. AI seem to be doing the hub act at DEL quite well.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Not official yet, but should be soon. The news reported by the "Business Standard" is incorrect, as per AI.

The next 787 was supposed to be delivered this weekend, but according to Boeing SC, has apparently now been pushed back by another week. AI *might* be waiting to take delivery of VT-ANJ before they officially open this route. (Again, hard to tell for sure with AI).

AI intends to use DEL as a base for 787 ops, for the immediate future.

And yes, this all according to the grape v/w/wh-ine, so please take with a grain of salt, as with all things Air India.

I too suspect the LHR route will be for DEL. The AI 115/116 run.

Any possibility of that changeover happening in December?
Thanks!

No Jeh, this beauty is credited to member 747-237, I have just borrowed it.
He has just extended it to `whine'!
The BOM-LHR rumour looks quite strong, and will be started once VT-ANJ comes in, possibly by December. None of the existing domestic routes will be axed. Mr Pal: bad luck, ANJ will possibly be the last 787 delivered this year, so there isn't much chance of you getting a CDG AI trip Sad

Air India is getting ready to take delivery of it's 4th 787.

A new Dreamliner (either ANJ/K/L) has been positioned outside the Charleston Delivery Center this morning.

All existing Air India 787 ops, domestic (BLR,MAA,CCU) & intl (DXB, FRA) have been extended until the end of Feb 2013.
LHR, CDG should start in Jan 2013.
All 787 routes are ex DEL.

ANK(h), the `Egyptian' plane, made her first revenue trip to Bengaluru, today (30 Dec'12). ANL, the `cancellation' (`annul') plane, should go into revenue service in the next 10-15 days, hopefully.

That's correct. The first 2 were WA (BFI) built.
Air India's 787 fleet (sorted by delivery) at this time is as follows:

VT-ANH
VT-AND
VT-ANI (First SC Built)
VT-ANK (Third SC Built)
VT-ANL (Fourth SC Built)
VT-ANJ (Second SC Built)
