"Such things like aircraft getting hit by ground vehicles or passenger boarding ramps flying around during strong storms are common at Indian airports. But something like this happening in New York is unimaginable," said a senior pilot.

oh really???? I didn't know!

Apparently, such incidents are common in big US airports due to taxiway and ramp congestion. Planes bumping into each other and damages caused by jet blasts are also fairly routine.
This happened last week, for example.

The airline official said the grounding of one aircraft will not affect its operations as "yesterday we had inducted a new Boeing 787 into our fleet and if needed we can operate with it our flights."
Meanwhile, to bring back stranded passengers, Air India is operating a ferry flight which left New Delhi this afternoon and will leave for Mumbai from Newark tomorrow at 11.10 am local time.
When asked about whether Air India would seek any compensation for the damage, he said, "We have to look at all aspects before moving ahead."

They should seek that. In addition, the Airframe Insurance would cover some of it too. |

The aluminum skin of an aircraft is tough, but very thin. |

The A332 doesn't look as severely damaged. Just the engine nacelles and one or two cowls. As long as the core is fine. And the step ladder's plastic roof seems to have been damaged badly, and probably not the wing, or so it seems, at least from the images. Had it been a roof-less Step ladder, the handrails would have smashed into the wing.
The 77W seems to have been severely damaged, and very much near the Pressure bulkhead that was the cause of the horrific JAL 123 catastrophe. |

Could be because of the pre-monsoon showers, Himmatbhai. I think Mumbai got one on May 23rd/24th. |

Cargo loaders + catering trucks etc. can do a lot of damage, aeroplanes are not very strong _________________ eP007 |

Air India considering Copenhagen service launch in coming months; SAS hopeful of India return
News
9-Jun-2014 9:45 AM
Air India is reportedly considering launching service to Copenhagen in the coming months after it officially becomes a Star Alliance member (Standby.dk, 06-Jun-2014). Meanwhile, SAS chairman Fritz Shur said the Scandinavian carrier will "hopefully" resume service to India sometime in the future. There are currently no direct services between India and the Nordic region, though SAS has twice operated Copenhagen-Delhi service in the past. |

What will the 'second' destination in the region be though, seeing AI's penchant for commencing triangular hops with the 787s? Amsterdam? Oslo? Helsinki? _________________ Yeah. |

I don't see any Copenhagen or Oslo happening, to be frank. The traffic is simply not there.
Whatever little there is, is more than adequately catered to by ME3/LH.
Why do you think SAS is avoiding India? _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

From: http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/no-union-activities-during-office-hours-air-india-tells-labour-leaders-114061600599_1.html
Quote: | No union activities during office hours, Air India tells labour leaders
ir India wants its labour union leaders to return to work withdrawing the concession it gave to them to do union activities on a full time basis.
The unions have challenged the move and served a legal notice to the airline asking it to take back the decision.
Last week Air India's industrial relations department wrote to office-bearers of Aviation Industry Employees Guild, Air India Employees Union and Air India Service Engineers Association which represent ground and technical staff withdrawing the concession. This means that about 15 union leaders who were exempt from regular duty have now to resume work.
The reason behind withdrawal of concession is not known. Air India did not respond to an email query on the topic.
A member of AIEG said the concession had been in place with respect to their union since 1980s and periodically extended till now. Withdrawing of concession unilaterally is in violation of the Industrial Disputes Act, he added.
... |
Why would you get paid a full salary to do Union work? If the union has work which needs doing, shouldn't they hire admin/ operational staff? Shouldn't that be paid by the union's membership fees? _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

BOM-LHR is also 1X, not 2X,
AUS flights require 2 planes, not 1, and the same 2 planes can do the DEL-DXB service too, if needed.
DEL-BLR/CCU are done by the same plane. _________________ Causal Determinism : We are hardwired to need answers. The Caveman who heard a rustle in the bushes and checked out to see what it was, lived longer than the guy, who assumed it was just a breeze.

Air India in talks with OnAir to have Wifi on board
21 Jun, 2014
Air India may soon have mobile internet access on board for its international flights. The airline is in discussions with various global agencies which provide equipment for satellite broadband access, a facility now available on other airlines such as British Airways, American Airlines, Emirates and Lufthansa.
The Airline's top officials, according to sources, met OnAir, the largest such agency in Geneva, this year, to discuss the options of installing on board Wifi base stations on international flights
"It's just a matter of time we will have access of satellite broadband on board our international flights. We are in discussions with various agencies and have met officials of OnAir. We will take a decision on it in the coming few months,"said Anil Sondhi, Executive Director, Materials Management and Information Technology at Air India.
"As headphones started as a paid service on airlines, a few decades ago, but soon became free, so will Wifi access in the coming years," Sondhi added. He declined to confirm pricing of the service or the international routes on which the service will start. Air India has also met with officials of Thales, a French MNC which makes cockpit electronics.
Ian Dawkins CEO of OnAir, a subsidiary of Aviation technology provider, SITA confirmed meetings with Air India officials.
In India however, domestic air-space will remain out of bound for Wifi access due to archaic rules of the aviation regulator. As per rules of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), use of any electronic device which transmit radio signals such as mobile phones or radio is prohibited on flights. |

Decision on Air India's Induction Into Star Alliance on June 23
June 22, 2014
A formal induction ceremony would be held here sometime in July and Air India is to have one of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner airplanes and an Airbus A-320 aircraft - signifying its international and domestic operations, painted with the Star Alliance logo and livery for the occasion. |
