Air-India to enhance US operations, improve services

http://tinyurl.com/2alcun
HINDUSTAN TIMES

Quotes:
Currently, Air-India operates daily flights to New York and Newark. The flight frequencies to Chicago and Los Angeles are six and five a week respectively.

"Air-India will have a daily service to Los Angles - four from Mumbai and three from New Delhi. The services to Chicago will also be enhanced to seven flights a week," said Bhargava.

Air-India has also decided to add three more US destinations - San Francisco, Washington and Houston - within this year after it gets possession of more aircraft with a view to maximise revenues.

"We have created in-house training modules for our ground staff and cabin crews to help them serve our customers in a better way. They are being sensitised to understand the changing needs of consumers," he said.

Air-India has tied up with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and French designer Pierre Cardin to create new uniforms for its employees under the "Making a Difference" programme.

An investment of Rs 4 billion has been earmarked for revamping the interiors of Air-India aircraft. The new changes will include luxurious seats for all classes, more luggage space and personal entertainment sets.

"We have to offer all the services that other international carriers are offering to customers," said Bhargava.

Centre not sure who will head National Aviation Co

The merger of Air India and Indian Airlines has opened up many possibilities

Quotes:

Another difficulty will be to decide between Air India CMD V Thulasidas or Indian Airlines’ CMD Vishwapathi Trivedi, if the government decides for a single post. But whoever occupies the top post the immediate priority will be to cut losses of the merged entity.

Indian Airlines and Air India have suffered operational losses of Rs 500 crore and Rs 300 crore, respectively, in 2006-07, according to their unaudited results that are still to be made public. The carriers are using income from the sale and lease-back of aircraft to offset these losses, resulting in a nominal net profit on the balance sheets last financial year.

Thulasidas named CMD of Air India

PTI [ TUESDAY, MAY 29, 2007 06:31:36 PM]

NEW DELHI: Government on Tuesday appointed Air India chief V Thulasidas as CMD and his Indian counterpart Vishwapati Trivedi as Joint Managing Director of the newly merged state-owned carrier.

As per the order, both would hold the post till March 31 next year or till further orders, official sources said.

Thulasidas, an IAS officer, retires on March 25 next year.

The appointments would take effect from the date the merged entity starts functioning, the sources said.

The pay and perks of the two officers would also be protected, they said.

The appointments are a step forward in the merger process of the two public sector airlines. A new company, National Airlines Company Limited, has already been registered.

Earlier this month, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said that the new carrier would start functioning as a single entity by the middle of July.

Patel had also said that the process of amalgamation and route-schedule rationalisation between the two airlines has commenced.

The rationalisation of routes and schedules of the two carriers' between India and Kuwait alone is expected to accrue benefits worth Rs 80 crore per annum. Consultancy firm Accenture is working on these estimates.

The newly-merged carrier Air India may also consider a public offer next year to raise funds and plans to launch new routes, including direct flights to the US, in the next two-three months.

"Public offering is very much on the cards. Earlier, our advisers had disfavoured the Initial Public Offer due to adverse market conditions as well as the low net worth of the two entities. Now, we hope we can consider IPO in 2008," Patel had said.

The merged entity's registered office would be in New Delhi and corporate office in Mumbai. Domestic operations and most of the special business units would be based in the national capital.

All cutlery, crockery that AI is ordering will now have the tail design logo )flying swan with the Konark Chakra) embossed on them.

It seems CD will be only left with a sublet of leased CRJ-200/700s for regional routes.

AI has successfully negotiated with Malaysian for six LHR slots, but are they only for cargo services? Read on

Air India adds six Heathrow slots

31.05.07

Air India has concluded negotiations with Malaysian Airlines for six additional landing slots at Heathrow Airport, the airline said in a statement.

'Air India will not be paying any money to Malaysian Airlines for the slots. Successful conclusion of the agreement would allow Air India to operate six more flights to Britain,' the airline statement said.

Slots at Heathrow Airport sell for up to £20m each, depending on the takeoff and landing time. As these had no cost, we can only assume that they are at unsociable times, and may be used for cargo services.

SF is just a suffix used for a converted freighter. It may or may not be an official designation but that is how to tell an factory freighter from a converted freighter.

The suffix can even be applied by the company that does the conversion. For example the 727-100QF which was given that name when it was re-engined with RR Tay engines for UPS.

Indian aviation giant weighs 2009 IPO
http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/06/05/business/sxindia.php

Quotes:
VANCOUVER: Air India, the new airline to be formed by the merger of India's two state-run carriers, may hold an initial public offering in 2009 to help fund fleet expansion plans, the chairman of the new carrier said Tuesday.

The new Air India plans to start non-stop services between Mumbai and New York from Aug. 1, using Boeing 777-200LR planes, followed by direct flights between New Delhi and the U.S. city before the end of the year. It will decide this year on starting flights to San Francisco from either Mumbai, New Delhi, or Bangalore in southern India.

The airline may eventually consider ordering the Airbus A380 super jumbo jet, according to Thulasidas.

"We will look at the A380 in the future, but not now because we're not looking at new aircraft right now," he said. "In this present order, the last aircraft delivery is in 2011. We have a fleet review exercise that has begun because we want to be clear on what we have to do before 2011."

Air India makes sales pitch
http://tinyurl.com/2k26kw
ECONOMIC TIMES

As a run-up to its direct service to New York from Delhi and Mumbai from August this year, Air India is getting ready to launch an intensive marketing and advertising campaign, both in domestic and international markets.

With a new look and feel and rationalisation of routes and schedules, the airline would also make a hard sales pitch for corporate accounts in the coming months, Air India chairman & managing director V Thulasidas told ET.

Air India will get delivery of new aircraft from August this year. The merged airlines would complete the rationalisation of its routes and schedules by the Summer of ‘08. A major part of the new schedules would kick in from winter this year, Mr Thulasidas said.

Mr Thulasidas said finishing touches are being given to the new advertising campaign which is expected to roll out over the next couple of months. “It will be taken to new international destinations we fly to in the coming months,” he said. New York would be one of the key markets for Air India which it plans to connect to Delhi and Mumbai this calendar year with non-stop flights. San Francisco and Chicago are likely to join the network with direct flights from India in 2008.

London, Paris, Frankfurt and Birmingham would continue to be important transit points for Air India in Europe even as it flies into newer airports in the continent. In Asia, Shanghai and Beijing would be key destinations for Air India to connect with higher frequencies in the coming months.

Sources in advertising circles said the multimedia campaign would involve print, television, internet and outdoor media. Interestingly, this move from Air India comes at a time when rivals, Jet Airways and Kingfisher (minus Air Deccan), have ramped up their advertising budgets for the year and are expected to have earmarked spends of around Rs 170 crore between themselves in 2007.

Mr Thulasidas said the focus would be to communicate the premium value of the product and the experience of flying Air India. Air India has empanelled a group of advertising agencies to work on the campaign. Commenting on his priority as head of merged entity, Mr Thulasidas said the airline would work on the IPO — slated for 2008 — only after completing the merger process. “My priority is not the public issue but work out smooth merger of operations of both the airlines,” he said.

Dubai-bound passengers stranded on runway

Its bad PR like this that will make zero any effort by Air India to rectify the defects in its image.

It had better buck up.
