Nagpur: The Maharashtra Airport Development Company Ltd (MADC) will lease 50 acres land in the special economic zone (SEZ) near Nagpur airport to Air India (AI) to establish an aircraft maintenance base that will be set up by Boeing Company with an investment of around $100 million, an official said.
The aircraft maintenance base will be set up over the next three years. Besides, a small portion would be invested by AI towards the aircraft maintenance base, the official added.
Boeing will facilitate the construction and equipping of the base using state-of-the-art technology.
These would be used for major maintenance of Boeing 777 and 767 by AI, as well as other airlines, offering immense potential for generating revenues from this source, he stated.
The agreement was signed by MADC vice chairman and managing director R.C. Sinha and AI's director K.M. Unni, in the presence of Boeing's Suvendoo Ray.

For the last 5yrs they have been religiously releasing info in press, once every year, about the blessed MRO coming up in the next 3yrs.
I doubt if such mockery exists anywhere else in the world. |

Maybe they are in cahoots with the Realtors to boost the MIHAN commercial market. |

Absolutely. This piece of news was first released by Boeing back when AI was receiving it's first 777s. It was scheduled to be up and running in 3 years time then and we're already in 2010 so another 3 years? _________________ Yeah. |

I have studied in Nagpur starting 1984 and subsequently attempted flying in 1989. In those days it was Datta Meghe the local heavy wt repeating the mantra of Intl airport, it was widely believed he owned 3/4 of the land surrounding the airport.
Unless one of the big 2 or both the US parcel cos FEDEX n UPS don't base their ops in NGP i don't see any hope for this place. What intrigues my mind in these press realeses is B767 being mentioned as a potential a/c to be maint by the MROs. UPS have tons of these in their fleet and now DHL are adding some too. |
