|
|
DEL has passed the 40 million pax mark for the 11 months ending November 30, 2015, at 41,578,677, and hit 45,231,723 pax for the 12 month period December 2014-November 2015. Based on growth projections it may well hit close to 46 million for the 2015 calendar year. This may vault DEL into the top 25 busiest airports in the world past MAD, and US hubs like IAH and MIA.
Comparative numbers for BOM are 36,777,285 (Jan-Nov, 2015), 40189793 (Dec. 2014-Nov. 2015) and projected to hit nearly 41 million for calendar year 2015.
This is the first time both airports will pass the 40 million mark. For calendar year 2014, DEL and BOM were just shy of 40 and 35 million pax respectively.
This would amount to annual growth rates of close to 17% for BOM and 15% for DEL. |

So in BOM where is the growth coming from - domestic / international or both. If international is growing, are Indian carriers finally seeing an increase in international pax flow? |

It's domestic growth that's fueling the numbers - BOM and DEL are at 22 and 21% respectively.
International growth in BOM is about 5%, DEL is about 3.7%. The numbers this year will probably hit about 11.8 million international pax for BOM and 13.9 million for DEL. While growth in BOM and DEL is relatively flat, growth at airports like AMD, IXE, PNQ, LKO and NAG has been stratospheric. I suspect that much of this increase is courtesy of LCCs from the Gulf and SE Asia. BLR and HYD also show large increases. Of course, the total numbers are still a fraction of what BOM and DEL see.
These are numbers obtained from the IAAI website. They don't break numbers down by carriers. |

BOM is already congested due to the location, frequent weather disruptions and its inability to expand. I think it is high time that the second airport be built.
DEL may be busier, but it appears that it can handle the traffic, except for the foggy early mornings in winter. |

The 2015 numbers are in.
DEL was just shy of 46 million pax with 45,981,773 of which 13.9 million were international pax. This may vault DEL to the list of 25 busiest airports for 2015.
BOM surpassed 40 million pax - 40,637,377 of which 12.7 million were international.
%Growth Over 2014
............................Overall.........International.............. Domestic
BOM ................... 16.1 ................... 4.6 ................... 21.5
DEL ................... 15.7 . ...................3.9 ................... 21.6
BOM and DEL showed sluggish international growth. However, BLR & HYD showed growth of nearly 16% over 2014, and COK and AMD were about 25%.
Clearly, the Gulf carriers are eating everyone's lunch. |

Delhi domestic growth seems less given Vistara establishing its hub and Air Asia India starting flights as well

Interesting growth in both airports.
DEL T3 definitely doesn't look particularly busy whenever I flew through it (both domestic and international). In fact, the terminal feels vast and dead. Either the terminal was overbuilt, or too many LCCs are being crammed into the older terminals (which I haven't stepped into since 2008). Is there a plan to shift the LCCs into T3?
BOM T2 on the other hand is the most beautiful terminal I've ever stepped foot in. _________________ Geniuses are always misunderstood in their lifetimes. |

That is the beauty of T3. It was built to never feel cramped or packed. The walkways and Gate Area's are laid out such that even if all flights are packed , you would still feel a sense of space.
Flying domestic from T3 is amazing. The Security takes no time and boarding through jetways is fab. |

DEL is growing by leaps and bounds.
March 2016 saw the highest number of pax fly through DEL in both international and domestic categories - 1,319,428 international, and 3,270,267 domestic for a total historical high of 4,589,695. Domestic growth over the same period last year was 30%, while international growth was more modest at about 5%. |

|
http://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai/mumbai-s-international-airport-four-times-more-crowded-than-others/story-vxgo6gii2AbmG3kqxXb8nM.html
The Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport squeezes in more passengers per acre than any other major airport in the world. According to figures released by the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) on Tuesday, about 34,000 passengers jostle for space in an acre at the international airport.
Comparatively, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport, India’s busiest airport, caters to 8,980 passengers per acre. The passenger per acre (ppa) at other airports is significantly less than Mumbai. For instance, the ppa at the Bangalore International Airport is 4,528, while the ppa at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad, is 2,197. Besides, the ppa of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, is 5,238, while that of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Texas, is 3,566.
The city’s international airport recently joined the league of big world airports that handle more than 40 million passengers a year. Earlier, IGI was the only Indian airport on the list. _________________ MRVC Mania. My blog dedicated to the new violet-white suburban rakes of Mumbai. |

So this seems strange to me. I have never felt that the BOM airport was packed. Agreed I have only flow out of the new international terminal and domestic on AI when they were in their old domestic terminal. LGA, now that's packed.
Btw I think Indian airports would be even better if they made the lines for security, immigration easier to manage. Having six people check your boarding pass is also a joke. Rather have a gate with an electronic reader (like LHR does). |

The title is misleading. The airport terminal isn't packed. It's just that BOM's operational area (air-side) is very small compared to other airports and hence the ratio of pax per acre of airport land is higher. |
