NAC to resume Delhi flights with new Airbus

DEC 26

Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has said it plans to resume services on the Kathmandu-Delhi sector in mid-March with at least two flights daily.

Industry watchers expect airfares to drop with the national flag carrier flying the Delhi route once again. Ticket prices have swelled three-fold since troubled NAC went offline creating a bonanza for competing carriers.

NAC said its new Airbus A320-200, which is in the final stages of completion, would be flown on the Kathmandu-Delhi sector first. The carrier recently issued a notice to appoint general sales agents (GSA) in Delhi.

NAC has ordered two new Airbus A320 jets, and the first one is expected to arrive in Nepal by February. It currently serves the international sector with two ageing Boeing 757s.

“We have accorded high priority to the Delhi sector as travel demand has increased tremendously. That’s why we have planned to operate two flights a day on this sector,” said Madan Kharel, managing director of NAC. “We have also planned to resume flights on the Kathmandu-Bangalore sector after a long break.”

Last year, NAC formally ceased its Kathmandu-Delhi services due to lack of planes. On March 14, 2013, NAC headquarters in Kathmandu notified its regional office in India of its decision to suspend its Delhi operations.

Meanwhile, Kharel said that NAC would station only two employees in Delhi for monitoring work after a GSA had been appointed. Before the suspension of the Delhi flights, NAC had 85 employees at its Delhi office with their salaries and perks resulting in a massive drain on its resources. “As there won’t be a big financial burden on the sector, NAC should be able to offer a one-way ticket for Rs 12,000,” Kharel said.

BLR ? After DEL, I would think they would target BOM which has more traffic potential and even CCU prior to BLR.

For some reason even the erstwhile Royal Nepal had flights to BLR, but I think they withdrew them after a year or so. I don't know what the connect to BLR is.

NAC postpones Delhi flights due to red-tape

FEB 25 - Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), proud owner of a brand new Airbus A320, has postponed its slated resumption of commercial flights on the lucrative Kathmandu -Delhi sector on Wednesday due to “inadequate paperwork”.

NAC spokesperson Ram Hari Sharma said that they were forced to postpone the scheduled flight for Friday after the Civil Aviation Authority of India asked for a few documents to get the permission to land at the Delhi airport.

Around 130 passengers had booked for the first NAC flight to the Indian capital after nearly a year.

NAC sources said that the Indian authorities had informed the corporation on Monday to apply for a new flight permission as it had suspended services for nearly a year. But the NAC officials maintain that they had followed all the due procedures.

“We don’t see any valid reason to deny landing permit,” an NAC source said. The corporation applied for a flight permit two weeks ago and its airport slot has already been approved. NAC’s operating authorization on the Kathmandu -Delhi sector is valid till June 26, 2015.

“The corporation informed the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu about the issue through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday,” the source said. “The carrier had waited in vain for clearance from India till late night.” The carrier received an air operator’s certificate from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal on Tuesday afternoon allowing it to fly the new aircraft on commercial services. The national flag carrier has planned operating four flights weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It plans to increase the frequency to a daily soon, NAC officials said.

The cost of a one-way ticket on the Delhi flight has been fixed at Rs 7,084 while a return ticket will cost Rs 15,177 including taxes. The flight will depart from Kathmandu ’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) at 8 am. The return flight from New Delhi will arrive in Kathmandu at 10:40 am. On March 14, 2013, NAC ended a four-decade-old history by formally ceasing its Kathmandu -Delhi flights due to lack of planes. The venerable carrier has decided to resume this service first after acquiring a new Airbus, the first addition to its international fleet in decades.

Royal Nepal Airlines may restart flights to Kolkata next year

Royal Nepal Airlines (RNA), which withdrew flight services from Kolkata about 15 years ago, is considering to start operations from the city again from next year. Initially, the airline wants to start operations with 3 flights a week. At present, Air India is the only airline that connects Kathmandu with Kolkata, operating 4 flights a week.

"We have been doing feasibility studies for a while. There is a good demand from tourists who are keen to travel to Nepal from the east, but are unable to do so due to lack of flight options. The airline is likely to begin flight services between Kathmandu and Kolkata again from the first quarter of 2016," an RNA official said.

RNA last flew out from Kolkata around 2000. Since then, several private airline carriers from Nepal, including Necon Air, Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines and Everest Air, tried to start operations from Kolkata. But, the proposals never took off.

RNA plans to operate an Airbus A320-200 aircraft with 150 economy and 8 business class seats. The official said the airline had been advised to fly into Kolkata on days on which there would not be any Air India flight to Kathmandu to ensure good passenger load right from the beginning.

Nepal Airlines lays emphasis on Indian market; conducts feasibility studies

06 May, 2016

In order to expand its business in India, Nepal Airlines recently conducted a roadshow in Mumbai. Talking at the roadshow, CA Janak Raj Kalakheti, Director, Commercial Department, Nepal Airlines, said, “The purpose of the roadshow is to recognise the contribution of the travel agents who have been supporting us since we started our operations in India. Apart from this, we are also seeking their feedback so that we can grow and offer better services.”

Praful Khosla, Executive Vice President, Bird Group, which is the GSA for Nepal Airlines, said that the airline is the only carrier connecting Kathmandu to three cities of India. “We are focusing on corporate, leisure and MICE segments. That is the reason we have introduced flight to Bengaluru because the city offers huge scope for leisure segment.” In their endeavour to connect more Indian cities, the airline is carrying out feasibility studies for cities like Hyderabad, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. “Once our feasibility study is done we will connect Ahmedabad. Nepal Airlines is focusing India in big way and India is one of their core markets,” said Khosla. He also said that they are getting very good support from tour operators, MICE agents, online travel agents etc. “Nepal has emerged as very economical destination and offers activities like adventure sports. Recently, casinos have also opened in Nepal and tourists can enjoy that as well,” concluded Khosla.

Currently, Nepal Airlines operates flights from three cities of India. The flag carrier of Nepal offers 10 flights per week from Delhi and 3 weekly services from Mumbai and Bengaluru. “We have Kathmandu-Mumbai-Kathmandu three flights per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Similarly, the Bengaluru service operates on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. In Delhi, we operate 10 flights, one every morning and one in the evening thrice a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” said Kalakheti. Speaking on the load factor, he said, “In case of Delhi route, the load factor is always healthy and it is more than 90% and for Bengaluru and Mumbai it almost 70% now.” He also revealed that the airline will soon add A330 Airbus to its fleet.
