Kingfisher plans to launch its first intl flight on Sept 3
17 Aug, 2008, 1043 hrs IST, PTI
MUMBAI: Vijay Mallya-spearheaded Kingfisher Airlines, plans to launch its first international flight on September 3 with a direct Bangalore-London flight. "The countdown has begun. We are all set to fly to London from Bangalore on September 3," a Kingfisher Airlines official said.
The airline has already secured permission to fly to 13 overseas destinations. A senior DGCA official confirmed the granting of permission to the airline to conduct overseas operations. Kingfisher now plans to launch flights to the US, UK, UAE, Singapore, Thailand, Maldives, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Hong Kong.
"We are fully geared up for our London flight scheduled for September 3," the Kingfisher official said, adding schedules for the other destinations are presently being fine-tuned. Kingfisher plans to deploy an Airbus 330-200 on the Bangalore-London sector.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had last month granted permission to Deccan Aviation Limited to fly to 13 countries from August 26, the day the airline would be completing the mandatory five years of domestic operations to become eligible for overseas operations.
Kingfisher and Deccan Aviation, originally promoted by Captain Gopinath, have now merged. Under normal circumstances, Kingfisher would have to wait for two more years to complete the five-year term mandatory to become eligible for overseas flying.
But now, following the merger with Deccan, the Government has allowed Kingfisher to fly overseas under both brands-Simplyfy Deccan and Kingfisher

Call centres don't have any idea about this plan. Asked to check up at the end of the month!!! |

Does BLR-LHR have enough premium traffic to make Mallya's little fantasy financially viable? |

Not too good a job advertising this flight.....They have 2 girls here running around in a bright red uniform trying to tell all they are starting up....
One tried telling me that the A321 was coming to LHR from India!! Same girl asked me the best way of staying and living in UK for her as she was here for a month or so for start up......???

Mallya has been quoted as saying he will be charging more than BA --- class-wise basis!

Call centres of Kingfisher still say they have no idea about the international schedule.
Even when given the flight numbers, they got back after being on hold for 5 minutes to say the whole schedule is uncertain. |

1. OMG! Is the fat and bearded one for real? It's almost late August and he wants to start in 2 weeks?
2. That schedule looks strange - either he's planning to use 2 aircraft to do the rotations, or he's going to base his planes in London.
3. Oh hell no. I have no basis to back this up, but I'll bet my ass that BLR-LHR does not have enough traffic to make the route financially viable.
4. Whatever happened to IT getting hitched to KLM and setting up house at AMS?
5. Am I a terrible person to feel excited about the inevitable sense of schaudenfreude> |

Kingfisher poised to inaugurate London flights
Published: 13/08/2008
India’s Kingfisher Airlines will make Bangalore-London its first international route, with the inaugural flight set for the first week in September.
Kingfisher’s other proposed London service, departing Mumbai, will now be delayed with a possible start date later this year.
What is certain is that Kingfisher’s non-stop daily flight operated by a two-class Airbus A330-200 will depart Bangalore in the morning to arrive in Heathrow in the early afternoon. The return service is set to depart Heathrow in the evening which would then provide an early morning arrival in Bangalore on the following day.
The airline is in the midst of finalising prices for the new service but these are expected to be highly competititive. Kingfisher will have to price keenly because it will be up against British Airways which currently flies Heathrow-Bangalore daily non-stop with a larger four-class B747-400.
In other news Kingfisher admits that high fuel prices have prompted its delay plans to launch ultra long-haul non-stop flights with Airbus A340-500s between Bangalore, San Francisco and New York. The airline is unable to confirm or deny persistent reports that when these flights start they will be routed via Amsterdam (from where passengers will be able to connect onto the KLM/Skyteam global network) to economise on fuel costs.
Kingfisher (which operates an extensive domestic Indian network) has now established a toll-free number (0800 0470810) enabling UK-based passengers to make enquiries.
The provision to use mobile phone on board is likely to be introduced on the flight. |

BIAL says this is the info it has been given from Kingfisher. They were certain about the aircraft type as well. BIAL also says that it has not got any information on the London flight!!!
(Ph: 080-2354 0000; 080-40581111; 080-41979797; 080-66782251; 080-66785318; 080-66785319)
Doesn't make sense at all. A345s are still in Toulouse and the A332s are in India!!

Call centres of Kingfisher still say they have no idea of the intl schedules. When told that all major dailies say it is September 3, they kinda got aggressive and said they had no idea and to check after a month!! |

Considering all the possible long haul destinations, if BLR-LHR won’t work what will?
It might not be an instant gold mine, but don’t bet your ass on it not making money in the long run. _________________ eP007 |

Since IT has interline agreement with many airlines including BA, is it possible to currently book say BLR-LHR-SEA on IT/BA through the SABRE and other reservation systems? |

Long run is a different story and is best judged when the market is mature enough.
And since you asked, no, I don't think there is a single long-haul route from Bangalore that can make money on O&D alone.
Yes, there are thousands of people travelling from Bangalore every day, headed to all kinds of faraway cities. But 50+ premium passengers to any one single city - no way. That's where BA AF etc come in. They make money because they can take people to a hundred different places from BLR. IT cannot. Not right now anyway. |

Well Kingfisher needs an interline agreement where it can feed pax to multiple destinations. You're right on that one. _________________ eP007 |

From the Financial Times, London
25/08/08 Kevin Done/Financial Times
Mr Mallya said that Kingfisher had signed an agreement with Air France Industries, the engineering division of Air France-KLM for the maintenance and technical support of its entire widebody fleet as part of a wide-ranging deal with the leading European carrier.
Kingfisher has also agreed to use Air France-KLM ground handling services for its operation at London's Heathrow Terminal 4 and has negotiated a three-year lease to use one pair of Air France-KLM take-off and landing slots at Heathrow.
The other slot pair in the congested London market has come from the Heathrow slot co-ordinator. |

And now comes this apparently half-baked plan of doing one-off international flights from each major airport (similar to the I'll-take-five-of-each-airbus idea)... I'm sure Mallya & Co have put some thought into it, but seriously, what are they thinking! It's something different every day.
Bangalore based airline... First international flight from Bombay... No, make that BLR-LHR... Oh we're moving base to Bombay, but the BLR flight stays...
I mean there doesn't seem to be a coherent line of thought with IT. Not so far anyway. |

Very reluctantly KLM.....they tried all to get out of it.....BA & AA both refused.
Wont be much Maintenance anyway as KLM LHR do not commit to more than the very least transit check and MEL defer everything else back to base. Here at LHR MX guys employed by airlines run from a/c to another. IT is simply a moneymaking business for them. No love to aircraft is given here!! |

I was bored earlier and so I did something similar, except that I checked all India-LHR flights to do a little comparison. This was for yesterday 31 Aug, btw

Am I seeing things, or does it really say VOBG? I thought we're VOBL now?
As an aside, whether this LHR plan would result in a schadenfreude or not, I've come to admire VJM's spunk. Reminds me of a certain Sherawat in moviedom.. |

It's all VOBL in reality, however the KVS tool which I used probably has a bug in there!
Mallya vs. Sherawat - kind of like chalk and cheese in most aspects _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Mallike's better off than Mallya. At least she doesn't need to throw money at people to attract attention. She has other resources |

There seems to be a lot of prejudgement about the flight in question and lots of data misinterpreted (which is ofcourse a luxury data gives).
I confine myself to saying that in addition to more glamorous departments like Engineering,Flight Ops, Crewing etc most major airlines also have a department called Network/Route/Strategic Planning and the people who run the department in the respective airlines base their decision on something more concrete than guess work!!!! |

Oh! scratch me off that list, please. I'll be very happy to see both VJM (and Mallika Sherawat) succeed in whatever they are up to.. |

In the lack of any other data source to us outsiders, this is the best we have to go on. Undoubtedly the folks in the airline planning team have a far richer access to data, but we don't see any of them contributing to this discussion. Hence it's left to us laymen to take this forwards the best we can !
I would appreciate if you could provide corrections or better guidelines to the interpretations where appropriate. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Oh of course, they definitely would have experts and all that making informed decisions on what routes to fly etc. And no one's said anything to suggest otherwise. It's just that, like Nimish said,
Also, don't ever underestimate the appetite of an overinflated ego
Just compare with how composed and systematic Jet's expansion and growth has been, and how it appears at least that there was more though put into their planning. And even then they're struggling in many ways.
Of course the crassness and vulgarity that are Mallya and his airline doesnt really help their image cause.
So, all that considered, lots of people do feel this sense of schaudenfreude coming on, because from what the public sees and hears, IT could be on the way to spectacular failure (which will be so much fun to watch unfold!). Or, less likely, great success. Which will be wonderful, just not so much fun |
