|

French success with the TGV has made countries sit up and take a second look at the train, says BBC.
Brazil is first off the block to say that it wants to dust old files and relook at a bullet train project between Rio and Sao Paulo as a definite challenge to LCCs.
The project, which should cost over $6 billion and take at least five years to complete, has already attracted the interest of local and foreign firms. The train line should allow travel from one megalopolis to another in less than an hour and a half, compared with about an hour by plane and six hours by bus. The two cities are about 256 miles (430 km) apart.
Brazil has few -- mainly cargo -- railroads, and transports passengers mostly by bus. It nurtured plans for its own bullet train in the 1990s, but a string of economic crises emptied government coffers and slashed Brazilians’ travel budgets.
During a recent visit by Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi to Brazil, Italian firm Impregilo signed a letter of intent with Brazilian industrial group Odebrecht to study its participation in the project.
Japanese, Chinese and South Korean firms had also been showing interest in the project.
The project envisages a train with a top speed of about 168 mph (270 kph) and intervals of 15 minutes between trains. A one-way ticket would cost an estimated $80, slightly less than an air ticket.
France and Germany have expressed interst in the project as France looks to aggressively market the TGV worldwide.
Brazil says that its problems with air travel are similar to many developing markets across the world, especially in Asia.
France says that people now increasingly want cheap, fast, comfortable travel with minimum displacement and a bullet train fits in this perfectly.
France now says it will be talking to Asian countries that now want a way out of tackling the problems of an exploding LCC air market. |

Maybe India can look at something similar for BOM-AMD, BOM-PUN, DEL-CHD, HYD-BLR and BLR-MAS ?

Problem in India is that large parts of the track will have to be fenced off on both sides. How feasible is that?
This is what the India Railways internal report says. |

There are plans between the Malaysian and Singapore government of building a high speed bullet train between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Ask me, travelling to my house in Naigaon is a nightmare.
The quadrupling of the tracks from Borivali to Virar will be seen by my grandsons, and ur talking about the TGV.
Also, do not think that we got the BOM=PNQ expressway so we are on the road to success, the red tape is unbearable, which can be seen by the current and reticent efforts to make a second runway in the existing VABB. We won't relocate or budge but hold growth ransom and push back our country back, well that is what has been hapening right
Imagine what kind of fools we indians are that would burn down our houses to get rid of a rat. |

Amen
The pace of quadrupling was almost zero for the past few years. But now it has picked up some speed in the last 3 months or so.
BTW, Don't expect more trains immediately after quadrupling is over. There are some technical issues due to which it will not be possible to run trains on the new tracks (lack of adequate amount of AC/DC locals). _________________ MRVC Mania. So then we shouldn't even talk about the possibilities but be content with our 'superfast' 160kph trains? |

I think it's quite feasible, of course you need to plan and provide an underpass/flyover every 100-500 meters in populated areas. Or maybe the "Indian style" level crossings will do? |
