An Air India Boeing 777-300, registration VT-ALU performing flight AI-188 from Toronto,ON (Canada) to Delhi (India) with 332 passengers and 14 crew, was enroute at FL350 about 50nm southeast of Stockholm, when the crew diverted to Stockholm after a male passenger (70) suffered from respiratory problems. The airplane descended steeply to FL100 within 8 minutes (average sink rate in excess of 3000 fpm) and landed safely on runway 26 about 17 minutes after the decision to divert, the passenger was taken to a hospital and is on the way to recovery.
The airplane departed again after 3:15 hours on the ground and reached Delhi with a delay of 2.5 hours.
Air India reported that the passenger complained about breathlessness about 3 hours into the flight. A doctor on board provided first aid and was able to stabilize the passenger. Another 2 hours later the condition became unstable again prompting the doctor to recommend an immediate hospitalization.
