|
|
National Aviation Company of India Ltd (Nacil), which owns Air India, is planning to revive the defunct Vayudoot airline to improve connectivity to small towns and cities. It had earlier planned to sell the brand.
Delhi-based Vayudoot was launched as a subsidiary of erstwhile Indian Airlines in January 1981 to serve the northeast region. Vayudoot grew to operating in 100 stations across the country.
However, due to deep financial crises, Vayudoot was merged with Indian Airlines. It ceased operations in 1997 and the airline’s employees were absorbed by Indian Airlines or Air India.
In its new avatar, Vayudoot will be a feeder service bringing traffic from small towns to larger cities and state capitals and from there to other national and international destinations.
As part of the plan, Vayudoot will operate from states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and the northeast region, which have over 50 small airstrips or airports, mostly not in use.
The official added that the plan is to operate four types of aircraft depending on demand: 15-20 seat, 50-seat, 120-180 seat and 300-seat aircraft. Plans are being made to lease these aircraft and also to ascertain the cost of reviving the airline. _________________ Aerosexual...! |

Let me guess the next headline:
"Air India plans to bring back old IC A300s for Vayudoot" _________________ Yeah. |

Of course not, what a silly argument! What would they do with all the Connies they've bought if they build up an A300 fleet? |

The insanity of this whole idea aside, there's another point one must think of here. Although it was fairly acceptable back in its heyday, can anyone truly imagine an airline with a brand name like 'Vayudoot' operating and surviving against rather more contemporary and snazzy brand names like Jet Airways, Indigo and Kingfisher? Just the name 'Vayudoot' has all the worst Doordarshan- or AAI-type sarkari connotations associated with it, IMHO, especially to an entire generation born after 1990 who've probably no idea such an airline once existed!

True that. Not that it's going to return anyway, remember this is a plan by good ol' Air India. _________________ Yeah. |

Is this stuff coming from the ministry? Or from the new expat heads of AI? Or from the assorted unions/ babu's who look back fondly to their days of "glory" in the past? _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

I am now positively convinced. The only way Air India can survive and perpetuate its brand image is by bringing back its meanest bad-a$$ planes like DO-228, HS-748s and (if still not scrapped) Viscounts and Connies. And merge Pawan Hans into it and ask them to bring their Great Westland-60 helicopters
Only then will they be able to launch Vayudoot..
And the services will be Mumbai-Surat-Keshod-Porbandar-Rajkot-Ahmedabad and such.
Its a different matter that the flying public will give them the Vayu-''Boot".. |

Senior colleagues who used to fly it in the North East call it "Yam-doot".
They tell of doors opening mid-flight, co-pilots being off-loaded to save weight etc. |
