AI's profitable international flights are between Cochin-Kozhikode-Jeddah; Kozhikode-Sharjah and Kolkata-Yangon. The profitable domestic ones are between Delhi-Leh; Delhi-Kolkata; Leh-Jammu; Delhi-Srinagar; Srinagar-Leh and Delhi-Hyderabad-Vijayawada. |
9 flights profitable?
Wow, let's bring out the laddoos. |

Air India has officially withdrawn the A330 from the fleet today. VT-IWA & VT-IWB have both been ferried out of Bombay to St. Athan, Wales today. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Those 330s did their job. If I recall correctly, they were first shortlisted by IC in their stated zeal to open up flights to China and Australia (I doubt it would have worked out).
AI did well by putting them on routes closer to home (DXB, SIN, KSA at various phases) and in hindsight it provided much needed lift with the 787s first being delayed, then periodically going conk. _________________ Yeah. |

To add to that, it carries forth AI's plan (?) of reduction in the number of types in operation, which are currently:
ATR 42-320
CRJ-700
A319
A320
A321
B737-800 (IX)
B747-400
B777-200LR
B777-300ER
B787
With as many as 8 x ATR 72-600 coming in, I presume it'll be the end of the leases on the CRJs and AT4s. The last remaining 77Ls are EY bound as well, so the overall fleet will in a year or so from now be essentially narrow-body Airbus, wide-body Boeing, ATR props for Regional, and 738s for the IX arm. _________________ Yeah. |

I don't see why IC could not have launched flights to China and Australia successfully. They were always better managed than AI was.
and the A330s did not provide any kind of replacement for the delayed 787s. AI already had the 77L and 77W for its longer range routes. At best, the A330S helped replace (to some extent), the ratty AI A310s. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Guangzhou was the floated destination in China I believe, but I don't think the A332 has the legs to do India-Australia direct? That would have necessitated a stopover a la Qantas, letting go of the opportunity to potentially differentiate oneself from the competition through providing a non-stop option on the route.
Moreover, the cabin on these birds didn't/doesn't compare well to the Asian carriers, with the lack of video IFE being the major garble, and the airline itself (IC) never had the personnel and experience to fly sectors beyond domestic India-Gulf-SE Asia.
I would have been very surprised if it would have worked. As it is, I don't think AI with their 787 and triangular DEL-MEL-SYD flight to and from their hub are having the best of times either.
Edit: Here is a relevant article from the era. The stopover was planned to be at SIN:
Quote: | Indian Airlines to launch services to Australia and China
Indian Airlines announced plans to launch services from New Delhi to Melbourne via Singapore with A330 equipment on 01-Nov-07. Frequency details were not disclosed. The carrier also plans to launch services to Guangzhou on the same date. Indian reportedly plans to connect services from Mumbai, Hyderabad, Calcutta and Bangalore to Melbourne via Singapore from Jan-08.
The airline also plans to launch five times weekly Bangalore-Male service and a second daily service to Dubai by Winter 2007. Indian has a fleet of 74 aircraft, including 48 A320s, six A319s and 11 B737s operated by its subsidiary Alliance Air. It operates over 300 services a day to 54 destinations within India and 18 internationally. |

Post-Modi meeting, Boeing to resolve AI Dreamliners’ glitches
Nov 27, 2014
Just weeks after Prime Minister Modi met Boeing top brass during his recent US trip, the American aircraft major has offered to resolve the constant technical glitches affecting Air India's Dreamliners.
Boeing commercial airplanes (VP-sales) Dinesh Keskar has told TOI that the company will conduct a "reliability improvement programme" on the first seven Dreamliners that AI got. AI was among the launch customers of the Boeing 787 and therefore got some of the earliest makes of this plane. The airline has so far taken delivery of 17 of the 27 ordered Dreamliners. Snags are more common on the older Dreamliners than the newer ones.
"We will do a nose to tail reliability improvement on the first seven Dreamliners delivered to AI. Each aircraft will need to be grounded for three to four days for this purpose and then they will be up to date with the present build status. We will do the job whenever AI can spare the planes for the required time," Keskar said. He added that Boeing has now stationed two Dreamliner specialists in Delhi for providing AI any technical help it may need with these planes.

It seems every few weeks it's a different bunch of flights that are profitable.
Maybe they were "profitable" (and I use the term very loosely) for an undisclosed period only.
More realistic is that nothing at that airline makes money. Except management, staff, politicians, bureaucrats. And all their friends / families / neighbours / tailors / etc. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |
