Posted: Fri Sep 19, 2014 6:33 pm Post subject: India - Gulf Market (seats, frequencies analysis) |
|
|
Hi guys!
This is something that I wanted to do for a long time, and I would appreciate your comments and suggestions.
I'll be comparing the number of frequencies and seats deployed on the India - Gulf market, between the Gulf Carriers (EK, QR, EY, G9, WY, FZ, GF, KU, SV) vs Indian Carriers (AI, IX, 9W, 6E, SG) for the Summer 2015 schedule.
For this, I will consider one flight to be from the first point of origin to the last, so as to not count the number of frequencies and seats twice, i.e - a RUH-DMM-CCJ will be counted as a flight originating from RUH to CCJ. It will not be counted under DMM

Excellent stuff Abhijeeth. I'm bookmarking this page now.
For 9W, each 737, take a standard 12/156 config, as it will all come down to that eventually

(deleted part of post no longer relevant as the reply in question has been deleted)
Abhijit16 - Good work. I am taking the liberty to offer some feedback.
1 You are double counting one flight between COK/CCJ and DOH BAH
There is only one departure. Let me list out the rotation.
IX 473 COK 1350 CCJ 1440
IX 473 CCJ 1550 BAH 1740
IX 473 BAH 1840 DOH 1930
IX 474 DOH 2030 CCJ 0320
IX 474 CCJ 0425 COK 0510
It is a COK-CCJ-BAH-DOH-CCJ-COK rotation. BAH -CCJ alone is sold as IX 473/474. There is no CCJ-COK-BAH-DOH rotation as you mentioned so you have double counted.
2 Regarding SLL. CCJ-SLL is a turnaround flight once weekly as you mentioned. But COK-SLL and TRV-SLL is actually one weekly combined rotation and not two separate rotations.
Here are the details
IX 405 Thu COK 0925 TRV 1015
IX 543 Thu TRV 1120 SLL 1340
IX 544 Thu SLL 1440 COK 2000
IX 544 Thu COK 2050 TRV 2140
COK SLL is sold as IX 405/543 ,TRV SLL as IX 543 , SLL COK and SLL TRV as IX 544. So again you have double counting.

Hi Abhijit,
I apologize if I had hijacked your thread. I didn't think that it will be taken this way. I just thought to share.

I don't know or care what others think, but in my opinion, you hijacking abhijith16 thread was obnoxious and disgusting and against acceptable norms of forum behaviour (if there is any that is ). Abhijit16 had clearly said Indigo, Spice Jet and Jet is coming up .You can always demonstrate your competence and expertise in another thread of your own.
Also suggest you respect the English language a little more. Or I guess my geography is hopeless. Do let me know where this "muscut" is ??? |
Better dont overreact. Educate me if I am wrong. There is a much polite way than this if you really care. Anyway, thanks for your opinion. I will try not to repeat. |

Thanks Himmat!
It really has. Just imagine, back in 2002, there were only about a 100 weekly frequencies to between the two, now it has just exploded! _________________ |

Abhijit16 - Good work. I am taking the liberty to offer some feedback.
1 You are double counting one flight between COK/CCJ and DOH BAH
There is only one departure. Let me list out the rotation.
IX 473 COK 1350 CCJ 1440
IX 473 CCJ 1550 BAH 1740
IX 473 BAH 1840 DOH 1930
IX 474 DOH 2030 CCJ 0320
IX 474 CCJ 0425 COK 0510
It is a COK-CCJ-BAH-DOH-CCJ-COK rotation. BAH -CCJ alone is sold as IX 473/474. There is no CCJ-COK-BAH-DOH rotation as you mentioned so you have double counted.
2 Regarding SLL. CCJ-SLL is a turnaround flight once weekly as you mentioned. But COK-SLL and TRV-SLL is actually one weekly combined rotation and not two separate rotations.
Here are the details
IX 405 Thu COK 0925 TRV 1015
IX 543 Thu TRV 1120 SLL 1340
IX 544 Thu SLL 1440 COK 2000
IX 544 Thu COK 2050 TRV 2140
COK SLL is sold as IX 405/543 ,TRV SLL as IX 543 , SLL COK and SLL TRV as IX 544. So again you have double counting. |
Thanks for the input, sir. I'll make the corrections. _________________ |

The way I see it, the five Indian carriers are able to compete very well with the nine Gulf ones, at least in terms of the number of seats and the frequency. Nine Gulf carriers do a total of only 767 flights, while only five Indian ones are able to manage 687! The difference isn't great at all.
It is the same with the number of seats, which is surprising given all the 777s and A333 the Gulf biggies operate to India, and the ninny 737s and A320s, barring a few, that the Indian ones operate there.
So it is heartening to know that our beleaguered Indian carriers are actually putting up a good fight and even winning in places. Good on 'em. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

I was expecting the Gulf:Indian spread to be much higher.
For every 10 passengers the Indian carriers transported the Gulf carriers did 15 .... which is pretty damn good. That's a good ratio when compared to India:foreign carrier traffic to a whole bunch of other places- France, Germany, UK, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Malaysia (lets not even go there )
I agree with The Goat, good to see the Indian carriers that strong in the region (at least seat wise) _________________ eP007 |

+1000.
Even if the ME lead by 90 weeklies and 50,000 seats, the best part is Indian carriers have caught up and are giving quite a challenge.
And, if the 5/20 rule was diluted/relaxed/abolished, I bet there will be a further explosion of flights to the Gulf, especially from I5, G8, Vistara.

I concur. I was quite surprised to see a small gap between the two.
And yeah, Malaysia for Indian carriers is just embarrasing, we have only 4 weeklies to KUL, while MH/AK/OD slam with 100+ frequencies.
I can at least say, confidently, that AI, IX and 9W have got this region right. They understood the dynamics pretty well, and went for it. There is still some more room to expand. Especially in RUH/JED, which is quite underserved. _________________ |

Dear Abhijith
Thank you for a fantastic thread and an outstanding analysis
2 things stick out
1. Still some unused bilaterals on the Indian side to DXB (60k seats each I think out of which Indian carriers are using ~ 45k) and to Saudi (IIRC it was capped at 63 weekly barring DMM which is an open port)
2. 6e has chosen to concentrate on 2 destinations and multiple frequencies across India while AIX is massively spread out - I was surprised to see the 2 a week to Al Ain and Salalah- I would seriously doubt the profitability of either of these routes simply because of the high fixed costs of running a station outweighing any return
Thanks again for this wonderful analysis |

IX never had staff based in AAN or SLL. For the AAN flight the staff used to drive down from AUH and SLL was covered by the MCT staff. The counters were maned by the local handling agency staff with the senior IX staff overseeing everything. That's how IX tried to keep the overheads down.
PS: things may have changed since jan 13. I don't have updated information post that date

Given the ME3 are doing a lot of transit traffic, it implies that in O&D terms - probably more goes on Indian carriers! _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Can you elaborate on AI's DEL-BAH-AUH flight? Is it a triangular return (DEL-BAH-AUH-DEL) or does it stopover at BAH again? _________________ Yeah. |

You're welcome!
1. Yes, there's a lot of rights to Indian carriers available on a platter, but no one's using it.
2. I find 6E's strategy a bit odd. The GCC ought to see more expansion from LCCs in India (which is basically high volume, low yielding, economy flying pax), yet not a single movement apart from UAE & Oman.

Thanks sir!
That was my original intent of this post. There was a lot of mystery on the number of seats deployed. At least, now I can clear this out!
Also, when we have new additions in flights, I will update this thread along with it!

Apologies for not making this clear in the first place. It is a triangular flight operates DEL-BAH-AUH-DEL. Seems to do well as far as loads are concerned. _________________ |

Very good review. So the Indian carriers are fairly competitive with the ME carriers on the Middle East area especially to UAE and Oman.
Could you do a similar analysis for SE Asia - SIN, KUL and BKK. It will be interesting to know how Indian carriers fare in this area. |

Great analysis Abhijeeth!
Been following this for a while..
Makes me wonder..while Indian carriers may be competitive on the ME routes, UL are kinda eating our carriers alive on the India-CMB routes....except BOM perhaps, now that there is a second daily operated by 9W starting soon!

Been following this for a while..
Makes me wonder..while Indian carriers may be competitive on the ME routes, UL are kinda eating our carriers alive on the India-CMB routes....except BOM perhaps, now that there is a second daily operated by 9W starting soon!

Thanks man. There's a follow up analysis on the India-Gulf Market. Stay tuned! |
Waiting for it.. stunning work, thanks..
Btw, will it be possible to pull out stats on the top five or top 10 western cities Indians fly via Dubai? It will also be interesting to see, say how many Indians fly the Sao Paulo flights of EK and EY.. |

Thank you, sir! Love your tireless tirades on SSC
Unfortunately sir, that part of info is unaccessible to me, since I don't work for the aviation industry (but there is an EK employee watching this forum ). _________________ |

In total, the Middle East Big 3 (EK,EY,QR) fly 409 times a week, carrying 102,497 seats per week |
The numbers for BLR are wrong. EK has 14 weekly flights to BLR, not 21. It substitutes B77W once or twice a week with B772. A332 is the regular daily service timed with US bank of flights. I don't think B77L (B777-200LR) is used on the DXB-BLR sectory. Its either 772 or 77W. |
Check again, sir. EK does fly thrice daily. It was always thrice daily, not twice (EK564/566/568). And the equipment changes are due from Winter 2014. Many points in India are seeing the A330 phase out, i.e - BOM/BLR/COK/HYD/MAA/DEL. _________________ |

Thank you Abhijit for your relentless support; its a great relief when human virtues are displayed in internet forums, though not in abundance; its a place where people unleash the worst in them!!
Btw, AMD - LHR stats will be an amazing piece of info to get |

One flight was temporarily withdrawn in between for a couple of months for DXB runway repairs.. It has since been reinstated. |

Conclusions: -
a) Mumbai accounts for a fifth of the capacity deployed to the Gulf Region, thanks to 9W and EK. AI and IX are absolutely dismal here with only a few destinations here.
b) Kerala region also garners three-tenths of the capacity, which is significant (90k + seats). However, Foreign carriers lead a slim majority over seats, despite IX's huge presence in the region.
c) The gap between foreign carriers in the lead and Indian carriers is huge in DEL/MAA/HYD/BLR. While BLR is not surprising, the Indian carriers attention in DEL and MAA speaks volumes of the lack of strategy.
d) In places like CCU, NAG, CJB, Foreign carriers serve the market comfortably with no opposition. Vice-versa, places like IXE, PNQ, TRZ, IXM, VTZ ,see Indian carriers serving with no opposition from foreign carriers.
e) Clearly, AI + IX dominate in the Kerala region, while 9W's stronghold lies in Mumbai.

No foreign carriers in IXE is bit surprising. Is IXE not included as point of call? At least G9 or FZ.... When they serve LKO/JAI/NAG/CJB why not IXE?? |

HYD numbers do not seem to add up correctly. If the base numbers are correct, then it should 21,181, behind Trivandrum.
No Indian carrier wants to serve CCU to Middle East !! |
