Per Livement: http://www.livemint.com/Companies/TiZWDBareF1cx8hot4iQ9M/Air-India-to-join-Star-Alliance-on-11th-July.html
Quote: | Air India to join Star Alliance on 11th July
State-owned Air India Ltd will join the Star Alliance grouping on 11 July, according to a person with knowledge of the development.
The Star Alliance board, a group of 23 of the world’s biggest airlines, met in London on Monday to vote on the proposal of Air India’s entry into the prestigious club, the person who declined to be named said.
Air India chairman Rohit Nandan, who was in London to attend the Star Alliance board meeting, could not be immediately reached for a comment on the development.
Air India and Star Alliance did not offer any formal comment on the matter but Air India in a statement said an official announcement will be made on Tuesday in the Capital by civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju. Nandan will attend the event in Delhi.
The person cited above said the airline will join the alliance on 11 July and one of Air India’s Airbus A320 will be painted in Star Alliance colours for the event. A new Air India Boeing Dreamliner will also be painted in Star Alliance colours to be showcased to the world in what will be more than a year-long campaign. |
Hope this is true - can't wait for the official press release from Star and Air India! Good luck to AI...
PS: Starting a new thread to bring all AI/ *A related updates together. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

The Star Alliance board meeting was yesterday, but there is still no press release on their website or anywhere else. The press release usually comes out on the same day.

Excellent news - now for the details. I hope AI does not botch up the details and keeps fairly liberal earning rates for the initial few years.
I don't fly much domestically in India, otherwise I'd have switched to AI immediately. Still, hope there are others who will benefit right away. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Congratulations, I guess. It took them long enough, but hopefully now it's a done deal. Of course, the Fat AIntie hasn't sang yet...

Thankfully AI used one of their prettier, proportionate ladies for that picture (or maybe it's a hired model). But what is up with that 60s beehive hairdo? Eek. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

True.
That Brit-Punjabi airport auntie in the background (behind the token male crew member on the right) has a better looking head of hair than either the OS wali or the Ai wali.
The two prettiest in that pic are the SQ and ET ladies. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

Time to get on AI more often, who knows when the miles would prove useful - even if I don't do across the world hops on the entire plethora of Star Carriers at present. _________________ Yeah. |

We have waited long for this and as a lifetime *G this has interesting possibilities for me. I will, however, hold off on getting excited until we know more about the fares that earn full mileage credit. This is AI after all.
I am more excited about the possibility of award travel on them, of course that depends on whether they open up award space (especially up front) to their *A partners. |

Look at it this way, when you need to fly domestic in India, then AI will be the preferred brand - even if the mileage is only 50 or 75% - it's still status mileage and you get the benefits of lounge/ baggage/ priority etc. Definitely a better bet than 6E or 9W.
If you're choosing a route like DEL-SIN or DEL-FRA and have a "better" choice, then you might choose to skip AI. Or now SQ/ LH FFPs might choose AI if they're getting a better fare or timing (or the #avgeeks want to try the 787 )
On "exclusive" routes like ORD-DEL or JFK-DEL or even LHR/ FRA/ CDG/ MOW/ MXP/ SYD/ MEL - DEL, AI is a great option for *A loyalists. These are AI's bread-butter routes, and they can now attract all the UA/ AC/ LH FFPs onto their own metal far better than they could in the past. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Any chance that AI will now start some flights to other *A hubs like IST, ADD or CAI?
I think a BOM-CAI route will do well. They could do it with an A320 even, to start with. Or they could do DEL-CAI, and time that with SE Asia connections. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

With the turmoil in Egypt? I don't think so.
I want to see Ai go for BOM-DEL-PEK 3pw or a possible DEL-IAD (after the FAA lifts Category 2 status)
I think SAA could take this as an opportunity to give up BOM-JNB to AI. _________________ |

True - all domestic India travel will now be on AI (unless they screw up earnings completely). The baggage benefits will help as the desi carriers are really cracking down on this.
I assume AI is now all naan-stop to the US? The FRA /LHR one stoppers are all gone? |

Well - it's AI - nothing necessarily stays the same or is logical. That fact that it's been non-stop only for 3 years is probably more of a surprise than fait-accompli! _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Yes, they are all naan stop and sabji stop, since they make stops inside India.
The AI US flights are BOM-DEL-JFK, HYD-DEL-ORD and AMD-BOM-EWR _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

It depends on how close AI and UA get to each other. If they do strike a deal, then almost certainly yes. If they don't then it will be up to AI to manage the flight on it's own - which will somewhat depend on how UA FFPs find the earnings on AI compared to flying on the UA/ LH JV. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

You have to wonder how UA feels about this whole thing. The UA EWR-BOM/DEL flights appear to be doing great, and one wonders if that will be impacted. UA will certainly hope that AI's reputation will keep the business travelers from defecting from UA. |

Many of AI's current destinations are Star hubs anyway, and, coincidentally, big desi centres : London, Newark, Singapore, Bangkok, Chicago... plus Tokyo, Frankfurt and Shanghai. It would be better for them to focus on their existing network and take advantage of these new partnership possibilities. Rather than start new destinations just because.
On the contrary, they need to slow down after a period of crazy expansion.
Operational improvement is nice and all, but the likelihood of AI turning a profit is between slim and none (and I heard slim just left town), so baby steps is all we can ask for.
And they do have their work cut out for them, if at all they care (and I'm not holding my breath). Compared to their new friends in Star, AI come up dead last in productivity:.

Jason, this may be the best thing that has ever happened to AI and they may do well despite themselves.
They will show up in the radar of people who otherwise would not have even looked at them as an option. |

Oh I was just giving my two bits on any additional destinations from Air India in the near future. That is something I feel needs to put on hold until they somewhat consolidate the network they already have (BHX, DME, FCO, MEL, MXP, SYD is a lot in a very short time).
They need to do much, much, much better with what they currently have, without increasing destinations for the medium term and aircraft or employees for a long, long, long time. That, alas, is going to be very, very unlikely, and my non-existent children's children will probably be paying for AI and the AI friends and families' flights of fancy.
But I completely agree with you; this Star thing is the best thing AI have done for themselves in a very long time.
Juxtapose that with the grab-the-ankles sellout by the other airline, which is probably one of the worst things they have done for themselves. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

STAR is by far the best alliance out there, so joining STAR will hopefully be good for AI's bottom line.
For one, they'll be the only STAR alliance airline out there on such high profile routes as India-HKG/LHR/DXB.
Of course, they'll have to beef up their premium offerings and bring them up to par with the better STAR carriers. Right now, only Egypt Air seem to have a worse soft product in J. |

The range of quality Star Alliance offers is pretty amazing. On one had they have the likes of SQ, ANA and Thai while on the other there is Egyptair, Copa Panama and AI _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

This is great. I hope they have decent earning rates. Atleast I can use AI for domestic travel and use them internationally for redemptions by using UA miles.
It will take atleast a month probably by late August to get the award space open on AI for other star carriers. |

There could some defections on the EWR-BOM route which directly competes with AI. But with UA's FFP premier status tied to travel on UA only, this could be limited. Still the VFR travellers who are also FFP on UA now will have a choice, they can choose AI if the price is same or even slightly higher. |

Apparently, AI's BOM-EWR flight is also doing very well. It is one route where AI are actually making money. So if UA and AI are both doing well, then there is no reason for either to complain, particularly now when they are in the same alliance. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).
