PostPosted: Thu Feb 21, 2013 11:08 pm    Post subject: The 2013 Formula One season Reply with quote

On the 28th of November 2012 I was revising for my Economics exam, while watching the Championship showdown in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A few from this forum hailed Vettel's remarkable come back from dead last to win the 2012 Title (*cough* Adrian Newey *cough* car *cough*)
2012 was also my first year in this forum, and I am amazed to see many people follow the Pinnacle of Motorsport (although it may be a second priority, as compared to cricket and soccer!). The number of followers of this sport increased in 2008, when VJM came in with the Force India Team, and even more when the circus came into India in 2011.

While I may not be able to update this every day or every week due to time constrains, I will try my very best to update this on the Monday after every race weekend. I'll also try have an unbiased about the teams and drivers.

Coming into 2013 the story is like this:
Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing Renault had won their third consecutive driver's and constructors championships respectively, and of course looking for more.
Mercedes AMG made the largest news in the paddock: Michael Schumacher would be leaving Formula One, and Lewis Hamilton would take over from him. Therefore, there was a vacant spot in the McLaren Mercedes team, which was taken by Sergio Perez, a young and quick Mexican. His vacant seat at Sauber Ferrari was taken by Nico Hulkenberg, leaving the Sahara Force India team to decide between a rookie or experience.
A few rule changes have taken place for the 2013 season, nothing too drastic.
Quote:
Firstly, from next season drivers will only be able to utilise the Drag Reduction System (DRS) overtaking aid within designated DRS zones during practice and qualifying for safety reasons. Previously drivers had been free to deploy the system as they pleased in these sessions.

Secondly, the team personnel curfew - which prevents team members from being in the paddock during specified periods - has been extended from six to eight hours on Thursday nights. The number of exceptions allowed during a season has also been reduced from four to two.

The WMSC also ratified a number of changes to the technical regulations. They include the introduction of more stringent front wing deflection tests to prevent teams from using flexible bodywork to enhance aerodynamic performance; an increase in minimum car weight to compensate for the increased weight of the 2013 tyres; and the deletion of the ‘force majeure’ allowance relating to when a car stops on the track during qualifying. From the start of the 2013 season the FIA will determine how much fuel the car would have used to get back to the pits and add it to the one litre minimum sample.

Source: http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2012/12/14151.html
I'll give an explanation for both.
DRS is a device used to stall the rear wing on a straight to reduce drag and hence increase speed. A textbook DRS overtake can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvat9Io0u20

Next up, about the 'force majeure', both Hamilton and Vettel were disqualified from qualifying because of gaining lap time by using less fuel and stopping on track.

The calender looks something like this:

Source: Formula One website

Teams and drivers
The brackets after the team name are the engine suppliers/ country.
The brackets after the driver names are nationality.
The numbers in front of the drivers are the car numbers.
'R' would be rookie.

Red bull looks like they will take the crown this time too ( I hope to be wrong), Ferrari has the punch too. Too bad the Force India team still has not signed up a driver as yet. I dont know why they won't sign Karthekayan or Karan Chandok.

Jishnu, a good analysis and preview of the 2013 season!

Sorry to nitpick, but you seem to have missed driver no. 13 - by choice or by mistake, I don't know! Laughing

Anyway, this means that there will be 11 teams and 22 drivers. No HRT this season, right?

Red Bull Racing looks pretty strong right at the outset. I don't see anyone challenging them unless Ferrari/Alonso or Mercedes AMG/Hamilton come up with a challenge early on!

Hope to see a good driver alongside Di Resta in a Force India car. Also hope to see them get at least one, if not more podium finish.

Cheers,
Vivek

Shivendra sir - Ever since the 2009 British GP (I remember seeing Vettel run way with the race!), Red Bull have been the quickest. Maybe not at all races, but on an average, the advantage is with them, thanks to the genius of Adrian Newey. It would be interesting when he and Rory Bryne (the designer of Schumacher's success) would be designing the Red Bull and Ferrari cars respectively in 2014.
According to testing, well, its like 2012: nobody will know until Q1 in Australia (people who do not know what Q1 is, do not worry! I will explain later! Smile ) Ferrari look good for qualifying runs, but tyre degradation is very high. Lotus look quick as well, Mercedes too. Red Bull would be quick, no doubt. Not sure about McLaren though, '11 and '12, they didn't have eye catching times in testing, but wow they took everyone by surprise in Melbourne!
About Force India, its getting a bit ridiculous. No team has ever waited for this long. Chandhok won't be coming in because he does not have enough sponsorship. Karthikeyan, well, TATA increased his stake, but I do not see it happening. After testing Jules Bianchi today, hopefully there will be a decision. Its between him and Sutil.

Vivek sir - Thank you!
Yes, I noticed long ago that there wasn't a Number 13 in Formula One. Many airlines do not have a row 13!
This article should help you out: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/12/01/why-there-is-no-number-13-in-formula-1/
No HRT sadly, its looking very bad for Spain. They had a peak of 3 Spanish drivers, 2 races in that country and 1 Formula One team. But today, its only one local hero, and one race. Hopefully the grid in 2014 will have 24 cars, with Scorpion Racing taking over HRT.
Like I said, competition looks very stiff for 2013. If Lotus join Ferrari and Mercedes (McLaren as well) in an early attack, Red Bull may just feel the heat.
Force India can repeat 2009. Maybe not a pole position! But we saw Hulk nearly win the Brazilian Grand Prix. They have the car, the team (not sure about the money though), all they need is Sutil. Bianchi is still young for a team who look to challenge for podiums.

I think Ferrari goofed up sticking with Massa. Perhaps Maldonado would be a better substitute.

As far as the championship goes, I would reckon a tight race between RBR and Lotus, with the comeback-kid "The Iceman" the only real bet. Meanwhile, I'm sure Grosjean (Fat-John) is scouring the list for whom he can hit on the First-Corner this year!

Optimus.Prime sir - Well, looking at 2012, Maldonado has issues of keeping his car together. How many times did he crash it last season? Many. Yes, his win in Barcelona was amazing & popular, but that was 75% helped by Charles Pic: he held up Fernando on what could have been a quick in-lap and hence, the lead & victory in the race. Well, Maldonado won, and Formula One saw 7 different winners from the first 7 races. Super! Massa on the other was a complete disaster in the first part of 2012. He finally got his act together at 2012 British GP, when he actually fought for pole position, which was eventually taken by team mate Alonso. He didn't points in Germany because of our very won Grosjean (and a Torro Rosso?), because of losing his front wing in the first lap. From Hungary up until Brazil, he was actually quicker than Fernando. He was again in the fight for pole in Italy, he produced F1 2012's best overtake in Singapore (I was there! Smile ), he took his first podium in nearly 2 years at Japan, taking the fight to the unbeatable Red Bull. I just hope this wasn't a one-off season stint. I think we have the '08 Champion (in our hearts at least!) back in form.
I sincerely hope Kimi wins another Championship before he 'gets bored' and quits F1 again. At the moment, he is just as he was before. Grosjean, well, I hope Yoda has given him some advice. I also hope that he does not try to behead any one this year.

PostPosted: Fri Feb 22, 2013 10:02 pm    Post subject: THE 2013 F1 CAR LAUNCHES Reply with quote

28th January 2013
Lotus F1 Racing Team

(Copyrighted Website/ Owner)
The Lotus F1 team were the first to reveal its car for the 2013 season. Its called the 'E21' where 'E' stands for Enstone, where the headquarters are, and 21 is the number of cars built at the factory (it also includes cars in the former teams: Toleman Racing, Benneton [where Schumacher won his Championships], and Renault F1 [where Alonso won his championships].
The car features a stepped nose, which many teams have covered by using a 'vanity' panel, as many people felt made the cars look ugly last year.
Last year was quite good for Lotus. They showed in testing that they could be a potential threat for the Championship. And indeed they were. Without winning a race, Raikkonen was in the Championship fight for 18 races out of 20. They could have won in Bahrain (race 4) or Hungary (race 11), but it finally happened in Abu Dhabi (race 18!). Raikkonen has what it takes to be a world champion once again. If the car qualifies higher in the grid, he can win races & the championship.
As for Grosjean? I just hope he stops his first lap incidents, or even if he does not, he should try not behead anyone. No offence to him, but he needs to learn as soon as possible. He has the speed, the car, the team. He only needs to calm down at the first lap of the races.

31st January 2013
Vodafone McLaren Mercedes

(Copyrighted Website/ Owner)
They were the second team to show their car. It is once again rather similar to the 2013 car. The MP4-28, is the 28th car built by the team. They have adopted the pull-rod suspension to their car, something used by Ferrari only last year, which was adopted after 11 years! McLaren also have the straight nose.
My God. Even if you don't like McLaren, you have to feel for them. What would have been a runaway championship for them, turned out to be a Red Bull and Ferrari fight instead. Hamilton could have easily won the championship if: a) McLaren gave him enough fuel for qualifying in Spain. b) Maldonado did not crash into him in Valencia. c) He did not pick up a puncture in Germany. d) He wasn't taken out by Grosjean in Belgium. e) His car worked in Singapore. f) And Korea. g) And Abu Dhabi!! h) Hulkenberg did not crash into him in Brazil. Therefore, he left McLaren, for Mercedes. Button on the other had many misfortunes too. The team was in despair when their pit stops would take forever to complete, when it usually to 3 or 4 seconds. Sergio Perez comes in with new hope, lets hope they can do something in 2013.

1st February 2013
Scuderia Ferrari
Sahara Force India

(Copyrighted Website/ Owner)
With the vanity panel, the unique nose and the airbox behind the main airbox, the Ferrari F138 is the best looking car Marenallo have produced since the F2008. In F138, '13' stands for the year 2013, while '8' is for tribute to the V8 engines, the last year it would be used. It continues to use the pull-rod suspension innovated by them in 2012.
In recent years, barring 2005, 2009 & 2011, Ferrari have fought for the Championship until the very end. Alonso has driven for Ferrari 3 years. 2 years out of those, he lost the Championship (by 4 points in 2010, by 3 points in 2012). If it wasn't for Grosjean's near murder accident in Belgium, 2012 Drivers World Champion: Fernando Alonso. He has been the second most conisitent driver in 2012 (first being Kimi), scoring points in 18 out of 20 races, being on the podium 13 times! Ferrari need to make a proper car for him. In 2010, his car was quick only by mid season, while 2012, he had luck on his side. He likewise, can be a threat for the Championship.
Massa was a disaster in the first part of 2012, but ended up as the second highest point scorer in the last few races. Indeed, he was quicker than Fernando, but it was impossible for him to win anything. Therefore, Ferrari look strong for the first time since 2008.

2 cars were being launched on this day. Obviously, Ferrari were given more attention as compared to Force India. Having only one driver at the launch, Formula One Internet trolls had an idea:

(Copyright: Loose Wheel Nut)
Well, anyways, jokes apart, back to their car:

(Copyrighted Website/ Owner)
They have likewise gone for a vanity panel, like Ferrari. And of course, they are missing a driver. Their season was best in terms of points scored. Nico Hulkenberg's 'Asian' fight back was amazing to watch! In the closing stages of the season, Force India proved that they can be real threats to the front runners, for podiums. Whoever joins the team, will earn a career first podium, if it happens, I see no reason why. Look out for our National Team fighting for podium places, at least in low down force tracks.

2nd February 2013
Sauber F1 Team

(Copyrighted Website/ Owner)
When I saw the Sauber C32 for the first time, I had the exact same reaction to most of the Formula One followers around the world:

The 2012 Sauber looks like the 2010 HRT (once again, thanks to Loose Wheel Nut!)
But yes, I must be honest. The Sauber C32 is the best looking car in the 2013 grid. They have an all new line up for the 2013 season. Sauber had their best year in 2012; achieving 4 podiums, 3 courtesy of Sergio Perez, which is why he is hired by McLaren. They are going to nibble at the heels of Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus. Look out for them as well.

3rd February 2013
Red Bull Racing

(Copyrighted Website/ Owner)
The car which will be used to defend its Championships for the team. It looked like other teams had finally caught up to Red Bull, but they were silenced when Vettel began his fightback from the Singapore GP. It wasn't their best of seasons but they ended up winning...everything (almost). This could be Webber's last year in Formula One, so he is surely desperate to beat his hungry team mate. As always, they will be right up there in the pecking order. They have also stayed with the stepped nose.

4th February 2013
Mercedes AMG Petronas
Scuderia Torro Rosso

(Copyrighted Website/ Owner)
They looked like a winner after testing in 2012, and they indeed won, in China. But then they faced their downfall. They were slow and unreliable. Poor Michael. Although, he achieved his first podium at the European GP, Mercedes felt what they were doing wasn't enough. Many changes to the car, management, and a driver: Lewis Hamilton is in. They may have had a very unpleasing performance in the last few seasons, with Hamilton, it can all change very easily. Up until 2008, there were only 2 teams fighting at the top (McLaren & Ferrari), but come 2013, we'll have 5: Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus and Mercedes. We have many interesting fights ahead. Maybe they will win a couple of races, time will tell.

(Copyrighted Website/ Owner)
Red Bull's junior sister. Drivers here are assessed for a promotion into Red Bull Racing. That's how Sebastian Vettel got in. That is how Sebastian Vettel's next team mate will be chosen. A rather quite team, I do not except much from the STR8, other than regular finishes in the points (9th or 10th places).

5th February 2013
Catherham
Marussia

AVIATION ALERT! Its right in there! 2 sponsors!

Both Images copyrighted..
These 2 teams are the back markers. I will be VERY surprised even if one scores A SINGLE championship point. It will be interesting between these two, now that HRT are long gone.

First test in progress....

and finally, 2 weeks later..

19th February 2013
Williams F1

(Copyrighted Website/ Owner)
A team which one used to fight for Championships, reached its downfall, and once again regaining its shine. It won a race last year, after nearly 8 years! Pastor Maldonado is another controversial driver, hoping that he will be his usual self when driving this year. The Williams FW35 should be another front nibbler, fighting for podiums hopefully.

That'll conclude the car launches section. In the next part, I will cover testing of the 2013 cars and their pace, giving us a slight idea of what to expect in the season. And then of course, the season begins!

Up till then, I will leave you with a few flash backs of 2012; Trip Reports which have covered Formula One:

UAE: http://airlinersindia.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=12519

Stay tuned people!

Brilliant compilation and analysis, Jishnu!

I notice that while some cars like the Ferrari look really beautiful, some like the Williams are downright ugly!

Look forward to the 2013 season and hope to have some great discussion on this thread.

I second that. That Williams car is probably right up there when it comes to the most hideous F1 designs ever, if not THE most hideous.

And coming back to Maldonado, I'd still reckon he would be a good fit for Ferrari. I would invest in new talent and get him used to the stable, rather than persist with an old warhorse!

In school now as I update this....
Being a bad boy Razz
I am a bit busy for the next 3 days, so I will update this thread with the testing summary once I am done.
Speaking of testing, the final test begins today, once again at the Barcelona Circuit, a favourite for everyone in the paddock.
You can follow it LIVE at autosport.com or f1tests.info

Reason I am posting this; Adrian Sutil is all set to be confirmed as Force India's second driver, after being sidelined for a year. He has beaten Jules Bianchi to the seat.

Updates later then!

I had foreseen a massive error in starting this thread, and today, light fell on it.
Its with great despair, and sadness that this small & ambitious project of mine has come to an end today, just when the season is in within sights.
Mods and admins - if you feel that there isn't much of discussion, etc (although there has been quite a few already!), do not hesitate to lock or get rid of this thread.
I am not going to follow this sport. All I can hooe for is that; may the light of good luck fall on the poeple who I want to win...
Without further ado, I finally end my short term in Airliners India.

What a brilliant race - the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix was!

Safety cars, red flags, collisions, and some brilliant driving.

Loved the way Adrian Sutil overtook the Mc Larens of Button & Perez and the Ferrari of Alonso!

Loved Nico's very disciplined driving. Flash of brilliance. But the race was so mired in controversy after Pirelli's tyre testing weekend exclusively with Mercedes

What a brilliant race - the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix was!!

Heheheheh I thought it was the most boring race so far .... it had 2 nice crashes and 2 great overtakes but that was it.

Sutils driving was great. Alonso didn't have a great car but was caught napping twice.
Perez .... what can I say Rolling Eyes moron of morons. He tried his luck with Button and somehow made it work. Tried it with Alonso and unfortunately got away with it (no way was that a legit overtake .... ) it was just a matter of time before he took Kimi out everyone knew that was coming. Idiot should have been given some sort of penalty.

If they showed us Kimis driving the last 2 laps we would have seen more awesome overtaking

I missed the first part of the race, I was in a safari at the Yala National Park.
The moment I switched on my TV I saw the Safety Car. 'It was inevitable, however, 5 races with no safety car is quite a long time! It has finally happened!' Although, I was surprised to see Massa out in the same place!

I think Chilton crashing into Maldonado robbed us of a spectacular finish, just like 2011. Pit stops were going to happen, and one had to be aware of Raikkonen's tyre saving Lotus E21.

Here is Raikkonen's overtakes in the last 2 laps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moPM3jlXy9o

Props to the Germans: Nico, Sebastian and Adrian.
Nico did an amazing job (actually, overtaking isn't that easy, as Perez showed) in controlling the race from the front, and becoming the first double-generation Monaco GP winner (along with his father Keke Rosberg).
To Sebastian because, well, he ignored team orders. Incidentally, I found this rather silly video where Vettel ignores team orders, and does the opposite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJh4O7u_pfU
And of course, Adrian, he caught out two world champion who were napping while driving in the streets, a usual Sunday after drive maybe?
Mallya must be very happy about this, RCB didn't make the play offs, however, two drivers from his teams finished in the points.

Anyways, I'll just bring in the highlights from the first 5 races here:

Race 1: 2013 FORMULA 1 ROLEX AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX.
After a horrendously long qualifying session, it was Red Bull who locked out the front row of the starting grid. When the lights went out, it looked like 2011 all over again - Vettel running away. A few laps later, the Ferrari's reeled him in, and stayed in touch with him. Following the pit stops, Alonso had jumped Vettel, and Adrian Sutil of Force India leading!
Anyways, as the race was entering its final stages, we had a surprise leader: Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus, who had stopped twice, as compared to the 3 stops of drivers behind him!
Eventually, he won the exciting race, ahead of Alonso and pole sitter Vettel, while Massa finished in fourth.
Here are the highlights.
Following video includes;
1. Drama from qualifying, Massa's crash.
2. The quick starts from the Ferrari's, and Mark Webber going backwards.
3. Pit stops, including the undercut by Alonso on Vettel & Sutil.
4. Maldonado's spinning business
5. Nico Rosberg retiring..
6. Pure gentlemen racing between Hamilton and Alonso (would have ended up with both crashing out in 2011!)
7. Surprise leader Raikkonen!
8. Charles Pic's idiocy -.-
9. Raikkonen wins!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jV9EoeUm61M

Race 2, Emirates makes its presence, everywhere!
2013 FORMULA ONE PETRONAS MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX (Multi21)
Team orders. This early in the season. No, its not Ferrari. It was Red Bull and Mercedes. In a race with changing conditions, Red Bull dominated on track and off track. They finished first and second, however, Mark was supposed to finish first, not Sebastian. In the feud between the two, it was sad to see Vettel not paying back after all Mark did for him throughout the years. Same at Mercedes, where Ross Brawn, the team principal, asked Rosberg to stay behind Hamilton, who was slower and in third place. At the end, Nico said 'Remember this guys.' Strong words.
And Ferrari? They just made an ass of themselves.

MASSIVE DEVELOPMENTS REGARDING PIRELLI!

They will not be racing the new intended tyre compounds in Canada, a wise thing to do, considering the fact that racing into the unknown with these tyres would have been dangerous.

From Autosport.com:
Quote:
Pirelli's modified 2013-specification rear tyres will only be used in Friday practice at next week's Canadian Grand Prix, rather than for the whole weekend as originally hoped.

A Pirelli spokesperson has confirmed to AUTOSPORT that the modified rubber, which will feature a 2012-style kevlar belt rather than the steel belt used in the current race tyres, will be evaluated during practice.

Each team will be given two sets of the new-specification rubber for evaluation with a view to them being used as race tyres from the British Grand Prix at the end of June onwards.

Pirelli had initially hoped to use the new rubber for the whole weekend in Canada, but struggled to get unanimous support from all teams.

By giving the teams extra sets for practice, this allows the tweaks to be tested before they are raced.

"We'll be bringing two sets per team for Friday practice with a view to implementing the new rear tyres in Silverstone," a spokesperson told AUTOSPORT.

"As the regulations allow for this and for reasons of sporting equity, we think that this is the best way forward."

The changes to the tyres have been made with a view to preventing a repeat of the delaminations seen in Bahrain and Spain.

By continuing to use the tyres for the Canadian Grand Prix, Pirelli accepts there is the risk of a repeat of such delaminations.

But it is confident that the new-specification tyres have solved the problem.

"We want to get rid of the delamination that we found is debris-induced and creates a weak spot and overheating," said Hembery of the changes.

"We believe the solution we have will completely resolve that."

The changes could also reduce the risk of a repeat of the four-stop strategies seen in Spain thanks to the operating temperatures of the new rear tyres dropping by 5-10 degrees.

And second, along with Red Bull Racing and Ferrari, Lotus, Force India and Marussia have joined in criticising Mercedes and Pirelli for their secret test.

From PlanetF1.com
Quote:
Mercedes are coming under increasing pressure over their decision to do an in-season test with Pirelli with three more teams voicing their criticism.

The Brackley-based outfit is in hot water with the FIA after it emerged during the Monaco Grand Prix that they took part in a three-day, 1,000km test - using their 2013 model - with the tyre manufacturer from May 15-17 in Barcelona.

Ferrari and Red Bull launched a protest and the Monaco stewards have referred the matter to the FIA, who in turn is set to decide if the issue should be heard by the International Tribunal.

While Ferrari and Red Bull were quite outspoken over the issue, the rest of the grid have kept quiet until now with Lotus, Force India and Marussia finally adding their voice to the debate.

Lotus team principal Eric Boullier opted against joining the protest in Monaco, but he is in no doubt that Mercedes broke the rules.

"Our position is there is a sporting regulation in place, there is even a testing agreement in place between the teams, and what took place is a breach of the sporting code," said Boullier.

"Whatever permission was given, it should be allowed to everybody - or at least to make everybody aware - and not to test alone somewhere."

Asked if Mercedes would have gained any advantage, Boullier replied: "Sure, you can gain any advantage by doing this.

"If they did it, I think it was mainly because they thought they could have an advantage, but it is more about the breach of the sporting code."

Force India deputy team principal Bob Fernley said: "If you are going to do a test you need to be transparent about it. It's not going to do you any favours by trying to do something you are going to be caught out on. Even if it's right, it's not helpful."

Marussia sporting director Graeme Lowdon says it is quite clear that Mercedes had an in-season test.

"My understanding is we're not allowed to test in season and from what I understand, that was an in-season test," he said.

"I'm sure it will be investigated with the vigour required."

We have a new team/engine combination for 2013.
Williams have switched to Mercedes for the 2014 season onwards.
That is, 5 different power suppliers in the last 10 years.
2014: Mercedes
2013: Renault
2012: Renault
2011: Cosworth
2010: Cosworth
2009: Toyota
2008: Toyota
2007: Toyota
2006: Cosworth
2005: BMW

Quote:
Just two years after signing with Renault, Williams are again swapping engine suppliers after agreeing a "long-term" deal with Mercedes.

As of next season, Williams' F1 cars will be powered by Mercedes as the sport makes the transition from V8 engines to 1.6-litre turbocharged V6s.

Under the terms of the deal, Williams will be supplied with a Mercedes-Benz Power Unit (Internal Combustion Engine plus Energy Recovery System) but will continue to manufacture their own transmission.

"I'm delighted to announce our new association with Mercedes-Benz for the 2014 Formula One season and beyond. Mercedes-Benz has been one of the sport's most successful engine suppliers and we believe that they will have an extremely competitive engine package," said Sir Frank Williams.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Renault for their continued hard work since we renewed our engine partnership at the beginning of the 2012 season.

"We have enjoyed a strong relationship that has resulted in much success over the years, including powering us to winning ways once again last year at the Spanish Grand Prix."

Meanwhile, Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff has billed the partnership as a "win-win" situation for both teams.

"The proud heritage of Williams and the company's commitment to technological excellence make it a perfect long-term partner for Mercedes-Benz under the new powertrain regulations," said the Austrian.

It is a win-win situation for both HPP and Williams, which will ensure HPP is able to supply at least three teams on a long-term basis under the new regulations and could open interesting new perspectives for technology transfer.

"We look forward to enjoying much success together over the coming years."

And in other news, Grosjean is called an idiot by Daniel Riccardo. Unsurprising!
Quote:
Daniel Ricciardo has revealed he called Romain Grosjean an "idiot" when the two met in the stewards' office in Monte Carlo.

Ricciardo's Monaco Grand Prix was cut short on lap 62 when Grosjean slammed into the back of his Toro Rosso in the approach to the chicane.

The impact put the Australian out of Sunday's race and earned both drivers a trip to the stewards' office.

Once there, Ricciardo revealed, it became very apparent to everyone that Grosjean was at fault but instead of yelling on the Lotus driver, he just called him an "idiot" and walked away.

"I came here at the beginning of last week really looking forward to the Monaco Grand Prix but now, frankly, I'm happy this one's over. I'm keen to get to Canada and hopefully have a much better weekend," Ricciardo wrote in his blog on the Toro Rosso website.

"The impact from the Grosjean crash was pretty hard but the car did its job and I was able to walk away, though the damage to the rear-end was pretty extensive. The chassis should be OK but it was a late night at the track for the guys in the garage sorting it all out.

"For myself it was a trip to see the stewards'. I'm not surprised Romain picked up a penalty: we were in the stewards' office together and, to be honest, I didn't need to say much.

"They had the data and once I saw the video, it was pretty much what I thought it had been. Tom Kristensen [driver steward, eight times Le Mans winner] was there and he's experienced enough to understand that type of collision.

"Sometimes when things like this happen, you want to blow off steam but by that point I really couldn't be bothered shouting and screaming at Grosjean.

"It was a disappointing end to a deeply unsatisfying weekend and I didn't want to waste the energy yelling "screw you, what the hell were you thinking?" I just said "you're an idiot", and that was it.

"If there's a bright side, it's that it didn't cost me any points. It's a funny sort of positive to take away but I'd have felt a lot worse if I'd been in the top ten at that stage
."

Aaaaand now I'm finally unblocked.

I'm afraid I'll have to rush through the Canadian GP Preview.
Flight is tonight, but other plans mean I have to get some sleep!

Anyways, where we left off.

THE 2013 UBS FORMULA 1 CHINESE GRAND PRIX
Fernando Alonso took a commanding win in Shanghai, following a retirement on the second lap in the Malaysian GP. Kimi Raikkonen took second, while Lewis Hamilton took third. Sebastian Vettel was just inches away from the podium in fourth place. Mark Webber had a woeful race, qualifying bad and retiring with a wheel coming off.
The eventful Chinese GP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_40WwoLXEw

THE 2013 FORMULA 1 GULF AIR BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX
Unsurprisingly, the Emirates advertisements were no where to be seen! Razz
Gulf Air A330 fly by: ww.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHUNdkE6q08
This was a proper Vettel dominated race. He ran away after his tussle with Alonso and pole sitter Rosberg. Alonso rear wing DRS was stuck open (I'm still surprised how he managed to the car on track, if not, the ground!) Raikkonen finished second, while Grosjean stole the final podium spot from Mallya's Force India's Paul di Resta.

2013 FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPANA
The European season began with yet another quick qualifying from Rosberg and Hamilton, and yet another fall behind for them. The race was won by home hero Fernando Alonso, ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Alonso's team mate Massa was third. Vettel was a lonely fourth while Lewis Hamilton finished down in 12th.

The Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal is the seventh round on the 2013 Formula One calendar.
The have been 43 previous F1-sanctioned Canadian GPs. Jack Brabham won the inaugural race in 1967. The event was held at Mosport Park, as were the races in 1969, 1971-74 and 1976-77. In 1968 and '70, the event was held at Mont- Tremblant. It moved to its present site in 1978 and has been there since then. The Canadian GP was not held in 1975, '87 and 2009.

Originally named the Ile Notre-Dame Circuit, it was renamed in honor of Gilles Villeneuve after his death on May 8, 1982, caused by an accident during the final qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix. In 1978, Villeneuve won the inaugural grand prix held on the island.

Of the current F1 calendar, the other circuit named in honor of a former driver is the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, home of the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo.

Michael Schumacher holds the record for most victories in the Canadian GP with seven. Schumacher, who retired from F1 for good at the conclusion of the 2012 season, posted three consecutive wins in this race from 2002-04. His other victories there came in 1994, '97, '98 and 2000.

Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes is the only active driver who has multiple victories in the Canadian GP. Hamilton scored his first career F1 grand prix win and pole victory in this race in 2007. He also won in Canada in 2010 and 2012. All three of those wins came when he drove for McLaren.

Thierry Boutsen (1989), Jean Alesi (1995) and Robert Kubica (2008) also scored their maiden F1 wins in the Canadian GP.

Round 8 in this year's F1 world championship is the June 30 British Grand Prix in Silverstone, England. Mark Webber won last year's race there.

I guess Pirelli are not changing to the new tyres, however, they would be tested in the first practice. They are bringing in the Super Soft 'RED' tyres as the options, and the Medium 'WHITE' tyres as the primes.
This circuit is a personal favourite of mine in the games, mostly because of its heavy braking with high speeds and the distinctly 'street circuit' feel due to the barriers being close.
I would not be able to post about practice and qualifying unfortunately, however, I will bring you race in the proper manner! Very Happy
