In canon the best for spotting would be the S3 IS. You can't go wrong with that. Only things you'll miss in it being a non DSLR are the hand zoom, high speed focus and optical view finder. But if you want to spend more go for the DSLR (N or C). They are more noisy, no where close in quality to the above canon models. That would be a very good choice. I have Nikon Coolpix S4(without VR), which is older version of S10. VR would make S10 simply superb. At best picture quality remains same as max optical zoom. Any experience , esp. comp with Canon? dpreview, stevesdigicam , says pretty good, worth it. Dpreview gives comp. with Cannon EOS400D and Sony Aphla 100, and all of them pretty par with each other.
