|
|
An SQ B777 operating on the Singapore - Paris sector made an emergency landing at DEL yesterday at about 1705 local time after the pilot reported trouble in one of his engines.
The plane landed here without incident and the a/c is still hanging about at DEL. The a/c involved is 9V-SWF type B777-312(ER).

Oh dear! SQ's B77W's are really giving them a bad time. BTW was it a technical snag or the diversion was for some other reason. |

Interesting. Not all the aircraft in that list have GE90s so maybe something else is going on. |

The term "rustbucket" applies to the ex-UA 777s at AI, which were touted as "brand new". _________________ http://openflights.org/user/akumanduri |

AI did, which is where rustbucket came from. They also touted the A330 as "brand new" imo. _________________ http://openflights.org/user/akumanduri |

I thought that nickname came from our very own COUGAR and his disdain for 777s.
Oddly enough, I don't think he's called those A330s rustbuckets. I wonder why...is it because his beloved Indian Airlines was to get them? Hmmm... |

the concerned aircraft (9V-SWA) was still parked at a remote stand at IGIA's Int'l Apron. There were lots of scaffolding around the port engine with technicians swarming all over it. Looks like the engine is undergoing heavy repair (if not a replacement) at DEL itself.
Which brings me to the next point - in case the engine needs to be fully replaced on a 777, how the hell will SQ or GE transport it to DEL from wherever they stock them? Looking at its diameter... it'll probably be shipped across using an An-124 !! Look at what wikipedia has to say about this..

Fault supposed to be in the gearbox.
***
If this happens to Air India's new 777-300ERs, they will have to think of a new excuse.
All along they have kept saying the fleet is old, etc, etc. But with a new fleet, a problem like this will have to really get them think of something new. |

A Gearbox fault......If they are doing a line repair I feel an Accessory mounted on the Gearbox.Unless we know the details would be tough to predict.
About moving an Engine,it would be airlifted def.
Wouldnt a B747F suffice.

You can remove the cowlings and the inner turbine unit and send it inside the belly of a regular 777. That's what was done when SIA345 did an emergency landing in DEL some months ago.
Don't see a request (at least till now) for moving anything to DEL. |
