Cubana to acquire an ex-Aeroflot Il-96

Cubana will take delivery of RA-96008 (cn 74393201005), an Il-96 formerly with Aeroflot. The agreement, Russia's ATO news reports, was facilitated by Russia's Ilyushin Finance Co. though no official confirmation has yet been heard.

Citing the aircraft's growing inefficiency both in terms of cost overheads and fuel consumption, Aeroflot retired the type from its fleet in March this year.

Cubana operates a fleet of three IL-96s on domestic flights as well as on flights from Havana Int'l to Buenos Aires Ezeiza, Caracas Simón Bolivar, Madrid Barajas, and Paris Orly.

Why IL-96 is so inefficient? Is it because of bad engine/ avionics , lousy aerodynamics or anything else! I remember IL-86 was a marvelous aircraft and a strong competitor of A-300. What went wrong?

The other 3 ex SU birds have also found a new home.

Red Wings to use three ex-Aeroflot Il-96s for Crimea flights

Red Wings is to expand its fleet with the arrival of three Il-96s formerly with Aeroflot. The Interfax newswire says the quadjets will be used to bolster both passenger and freight capacity on flights to Simferopol in Russian-occupied Crimea. Airlines that have served the controversial resort town have been subjected to hard-hitting European and US sponsored targeted sanctions, chief among them, Dobrolet.

The IL-96 was a competitor to the A340, not the A300.

Specifically, the IL96M was a direct competitor to the A340-300. It also used Pratt and Whitney PW 2337 engines and featured Western avionics. There is some rumour that the IL-96M failed because the US Exim Bank withheld the finances for its development under pressure from Boeing. The issue was sorted out later after Aeroflot ordered B737s and B767s , but the damage was done and the A343 had taken over whatever market was there.

Maybe the Russians should have tried to develop a twin engined version, directly competing with the A330.

I never said IL-96 was a competitor of A300 rather it was IL-86. Yes, you are right IL-96 was designed with A 340 in mind. Also USSR did not have any long range aircraft that could reach Moscow to Havana nonstop. But the whole IL 96 project failed because of lack of high bypass turbo fan engine. West beat USSR in this technology.

IL-96 did indeed have a high bypass turbofan engine, the Aviadvigatel PS-90. It is the IL-86 which had the low bypass engines.

Cubana to lease an additional Il-96 from IFC

Cubana has signed a preliminary agreement wit the Ilyushin Finance Co. (IFC) for the lease of one Il-96 with delivery scheduled for the second quarter of the year.

The Cuban carrier operates a fleet of three IL-96-300s with two former Aeroflot airframes slated to enter revenue service shortly.

The widebody is used on flights from Havana Int'l to Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, France, and Spain.

Cubana is a fun airline.

Their flights to Paris and Madrid are often known to be up to 12-14 hours late.

On one occasion one of their IL-96S suffered an engine failure in Paris. The pilot simply shut the offending engine down, and flew back to Havana on three engines. Very Happy
