http://www.newindianexpress.com/business/news/Runway-Recarpeting-Partial-Closure-to-Hit-Functioning-of-Calicut-Airport-Hard/2015/02/23/article2682017.ece

CCJ runway partial closure effective 01MAY15 is more or less confirmed. With the partial closure no code E aircraft will be able to operate ex CCJ which roughly translates that no wide body operations will be permitted for 6 months beginning 01MAY15. Even airlines operating narrow bodies will have to endure payload restriction during the operation.

The Reservations have been closed by AI, SV and EK on all wide body operations ex CCJ. This closure will be affecting flights on the following routes

(1) Air India:-

* 3 weekly CCJ RUH: This is being moved to COK RUH effective 01MAY15
* 5 weekly CCJ JED: This too moves to COK JED effective 02MAY15

(2) Emirates:-

* 11 weekly CCJ DXB

(3) Saudi Arabian:-

* 7 weekly departures ex CCJ to JED, DMM and RUH in assorted fashion.

From reliable sources SV and EK are free to deploy the CCJ capacity between COK and TRV without any restriction i.e they can deploy all of the CCJ capacity to COK or TRV or both.

As the days go by, I guess we will see how airlines redeploy the capacity.

Update on the above, AI moves its CCJ JED operation to COK JED from MAY15 after which Air India would have taken care of its redeploying its wide body capacity ex CCJ.

SV and EK decisions are awaited as of now.

Can EK temporarily hand over that route to FZ?

What about Kannur Airport. Why don't they speed up the opening of that?

Looks like COK & IXE are only other options, or maybe the metros would get some boost.

Kannur has still significant way to go before it becomes operational. A 3rd option available is CJB.

AFAIK, CJB cannot take widebodies.

...and while IXE Bajpe has handled wide-body traffic in the past, it does not get regular wide-body traffic. Is it because of the `difficult' operations at the airport?
Thanks, Sumantra.

.

Not exactly. The runway can handle an A330 with no problems. And the strength of the taxiways is okay. The problem lies with the apron. The biggest aircraft that can be held on the stands is a Boeing 767-300. SV's or EK's A330s/B777s have longer wingspan that could eat into other parking stands space.
