Dragonair to step up Kolkata departures from May
Feb 25
Hong Kong-based airline operator Dragonair Wednesday said it is increasing its weekly flights from the metropolis to Chinese territory from five to six effective May 12.
“Kolkata is a growing market with huge potential for travel and the addition of this flight will benefit travellers from the corporate sector along with leisure travellers, traders, students, exporters and travellers from the Buddhist community,” the airline’s general manager for South Asia, Middle East and Africa Charlie Stewart-Cox said.
“This service will offer more options and greater convenience when travelling to Hong Kong and enable them to connect seamlessly with flights to more than 203 destinations in the Dragonair and Cathay Pacific network,” he said.
The company launched flights from Kolkata to Hong Kong in November 2012 with four departures a week adding the fifth weekly flight later the following year.
The company said that along with its sister airline Cathay Pacific, it will now operate 48 passenger flights every week between Hong Kong and six major gateways in India comprising Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Cathy et al ignored Kolkata for decades for unknown reasons. Now they have sensed its potentials. I hope CCU-Hong Kong will be as active as CCU-Bangkok sector. With this Kolkata could become important gateway to US/Canadian west coast. _________________ Sabya99 |

Cathay Pacific rules out flights from Kolkata
Mar 11 2015
Hopes are sky high as Cathay Pacific prepares to kick off a new freighter service between Kolkata and Hong Kong on Thursday but the airline has no immediate plans of introducing passenger flights from the city.
“Kolkata offers a huge cargo market with a large catchment area comprising West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattishgarh and the north-eastern states and Cathay Pacific is keen on tapping this market by running a scheduled non-stop freighter service (B747-400F aircraft). Although the aircraft has a cargo carrying capacity of 100 tonne, initially we are looking at handling 30 tonne from Kolkata. The rest will be filled up from Delhi (the aircraft will come via Delhi),” said Stewart-Cox. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Why would CX consider CCU, when it is served by its subsidiary - Dragon Air, which is nearly the same as CX. For a relatively short distance, Dragon Air is ideal. |

If Kolkata is a gateway to anywhere it would be the eastern states, how would it be a gateway for US/Canadian west coast flights? Cathay/Dragon serve a bunch of other Indian cities as well? _________________ eP007 |
