GoAir flight lands on closed runway at Mumbai

April 4th, 2008 - 11:47 pm

Mumbai, April 4 (IANS) A GoAir flight from Chennai to Mumbai, with 120 passengers on board, landed on a runway closed for maintenance Friday evening. The landing was normal, said an official of Airport Authority of India (AAI). The official said maintenance works were being carried out on the runway at Mumbai airport when the GoAir aircraft landed.

“The runway was closed for maintenance. While workers ran for cover, the aircraft fortunately landed safely,” he said.

The authorities said it could be the fault of the air traffic control officials.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is likely to launch a probe into to the incident.

GoAir said the aircraft’s pilot followed the instructions of the ATC officials. It said the aircraft landed after receiving clearance for landing at the Mumbai airport.

Lucky nothing happened.

even if it was a ATC mess up.... i think the pilots are also responsible... they are supposed to be updated with the notams for the destination... but i cant say anything until the probe is complete and we actually know what really happened...

there is something missing here. In DEL it is not very difficult to get messed up on the approach to 09 and 10 while on visuals (remember the SpiceJet that landed on 10 while cleared on 09), but in BOM its quite different with the runway orientations being significantly different. Unless the PNF configured the aircraft incorrectly(highly unlikely).

It could have been worse,if the Aircraft in question was a Wide Body & could not stop well before the construction zone.
