I'll start with the those airlines you've mentioned that aren't flying out of BOM.

Austrian:- This is a route they have tried and dropped for a countless number of times. They just couldn't make it work with a shoddy product and with LH/LX/BA/AF/EK in competition.

Alitalia:- Operated BOM prior to it's restructuring.

Finnair:- Also operated BOM for a short time, probably dropped due to poor yields

SAS, Iberia & LOT :- Those airlines would never operate in the sector. BA/IB's cooperation would ensure this wouldn't happen. SAS & LOT either don't have the required potential or the available connections.

KLM:- Codeshares on Delta's BOM-AMS route.

Regarding EU carriers on the route, their loads haven't shrunk and they've got a loyal customer base. So they'll manage to keep their heads afloat.

Iberia had tried BOM some years back, I still remember their MAD - BOM - NRT flight, it used to be the only India - Japan non-stop those days.

Of course KLM used to be a daily customer at BOM too.

What made these routes dry up, in spite of Indian economy growing by leaps and bounds in the subsequent years.

Polish LOT used to have a direct DEL terminator flight. They had quit DEL soon after and now they are trying out Hanoi. What makes Hanoi click while India couldn't sustain certain direct routes is a mystery. With 1.2 billion + people , growing outbound traffic & economy of the future, India should be having a more diverse portfolio of foreign airlines in the country. DEL is doing fine with 50 + foreign carriers, but it can do much better, so is BOM

Lots of airlines (Iberia, JAT, CSA, Balkan, LOT and the like) flew to Bombay in the past for a whole lot of reasons, including range, capacity, fuel prices, no other alternatives in India, multi-stop penchants and less competition.

Also, until fairly recently, the big guns of BA, LH and AF didn't even have a single daily flight, and even those flights weren't turnarounds. Besides, Emirates and Etihad and the like didn't exist back then.

So demand hasn't diminished at all. It has grown and simply shifted.

As for LOT, they attempted Hanoi because of the big Vietnamese population in Poland (the largest in Europe, I believe). The same reason why AI flew to Birmingham. Of course, when demand is so low yielding, it's not going to last, so LOT had to pull. AI have no such issues, because you and I will continue to refill their begging bowl.

Interesting that VS and 9W are the only 2 "non-aligned" carriers on the non-stop routing (leaving aside AI).

If OS does better as an overall carrier, I suspect they may restart BOM - mostly as a way for group LH to maximize traffic. However OS itself is not doing well, don't have quite as robust a non-European network, hence they probably withdrew.

You've forgotten to mention TK - another European airline doing non-stops from BOM-Europe. Or is IST considered as Asia?

I think that JAT, CSA, Balkan and LOT flew to BOM solely because India had excellent relations with Communist Eastern Europe, and DEL 's intl airport back then was quite horrible. Besides, these were all state-run carriers who cared nothing for profit, load or yields. Once the Berlin Wall fell and Communism was booted out , all of them withdrew from India.

I remember seeing CSA's IL-62 in BOM sometime in the '80s. It was the first time I saw an IL-62 and It left me very excited indeed. Cool airplane, very smoky and loud!

Istanbul is very much in Europe!

TK are probably doing well with a daily 330 operation to the city (Or is it 6-weekly?). IST is a mess and too cramped to deal with the influx of transiting passengers, but they seem to be managing just fine.

VS and 9W partner each other . They have a Reciprocal Frequent Flier partnership . Also VS code share on the 9W afternoon departure from BOM to LHR . They use this code share to pick up all their Inbound West Cost traffic from LHR to BOM .

With VS starting a Short Haul Network Ex LHR to Manchester , Aberdeen and Edinburgh . 9W will use a lot more of VS at LHR .

Also 9W use the vast VS network to the US from LHR .

Saying that they do compete head on on LHR routes and also on traffic to EWR from both BOM and DEL .

Hhaha - my listing those airlines was purely a coincidence! But you're right, that was a big reason for those to fly here.

There were plenty of other airlines too that stopped in India for convenience (as it related to the time).

I'll take transiting through IST over CDG, FRA, LHR or the crowded, blinged out and often smelly mall that is DXB any day!
