Interesting read.....
According to Thales Aerospace, the second-most expensive item on an airplane is its state-of-the-art inflight entertainment (IFE) system. IFEs are apparently the next competitive frontier, can cost between $2 and $5 million per system and weigh as much as 5k pounds – which also results in some big extra fuel $$. By the way, the most expensive items are the engines.

At those prices, it may soon be cheaper to rent/sell a portable IFE device, pre-loaded with the software required for a flight, which can then be an optional extra for those who want it. For example, a family of four can easily do with only two IFEs, and many people only want to sleep on long flights.
But thanks, I did not know that IFE could add up to that much. |
