A young aged guy recently employeed in DN had an argument with me the other day and said that his airline offers 95% on time performence and that the delays in the media are only hyped up and a few incidents that take place.
Althoug i agree with him that few delays are hyped up in the media but95% on time performence? says he was told about those figures when they were under training _________________ http://www.myspace.com/avsatsworld

It depends on what consititutes their percntage ratings of on time performance.This can be manuplated too.

There's a lot of buffer in this number. DN treats a flight within one-hour of the scheduled time as an "ontime flight". There are also some other such manipulation involved (don't remember now). |

DN inflight magazine mentions on-time as flights which complete within one hour of the scheduled arrival. So even for flights less than 1 hour duration, if they are off by one hour , it counts as on-time
But to be fair to them, based on four flights that I have flown with them so far, all of them have been on time. Maybe I have been lucky, or media exaggerates the delays. Truth probably lies somewhere in between |

The inflight magazine of DN advertises the same 95% on-time performance which it says is within 1 hr of scheduled completion of flight. Had an interesting experience last friday when flying HYD-BLR on DN. The flight was delayed by 20 mins, but there was no announcement by DN. People had lined up for boarding by 5:45 for 6:00pm flight but there was no announcement and no DN representative was near the boarding area. finally, one turned up and on inquiring, said that the flight was delayed by 20 mins. There was still no public announcement. After around 15 mins, I went back to her and asked her why no announcement was made and she said she informed individual passengers which I found hard to believe. I asked her if the incoming flight had arrived and she said no. I then told her why they hadn't announced it as other airlines announced delays of even 10-15 mins. I asked her if it was company policy to not announce delay till a specified period of time, and she said no. I asked her why they weren't being frank with the passengers, as there was no shame in announcing a delay. She just shrugged and embarrassingly told that DN considered it a delay only if it was above 1 hr! At this time, the time was 6:10 and flight was supposed to leave at 6:00pm! And even if flight was supposed to leave at 6:20pm, boarding should have started by now!
Some passengers hearing my exchange with her said that this was routine with DN as they weren't sure when the plane would arrive. The DN lady then quietly left her station. At 6:20pm, there was an announcement by DN that there was a "further 20 min delay" and that flight would leave at 6:40pm. This when no initial announcement was made about the delay! Finally, boarding started at 6:40 and flight departed at 7:00pm |

interesting...indeed really interesting A 1 hour delay is called a delay but a 59 minutes 'delay' means on time !!!!!!!

Calculation of on-time performance in the U.S and the Department of Transportation code is:
Calculation of on-time performance and codes.
(a) Each reporting carrier shall calculate an on-time performance code in
accordance with this section and as provided in more detail in accounting
and reporting directives issued by the Director, Office of Airline Information.
The calculations shall be performed for each reportable flight, except those scheduled to operate three times or less during a month. In addition, each reporting carrier shall assign an ontime performance code to each of its single plane one-stop or multi-stop flights, or portion thereof, that the carrier holds out to the public through a CRS, the last segment of which is a reportable flight.
(b) The on-time performance code shall be calculated as follows:
(1) Based on reportable flight data provided to the Department, calculate
the percentage of on-time arrivals of each nonstop flight. Calculations shall not include discontinued or extra-section flights for which data are not reported to the Department.
(2) Based upon the on-time performance percentage calculated in paragraph (b)(1) of this section, assign a single digit code to each flight that reflects the percentile of on-time performance achieved by the flight, as set forth in the following table:

Air Deccan hits it off with Frankfinn

MUMBAI: Going ahead with its outsourcing spree, budget-carrier Air Deccan today tied up with Frankfinn Institute of Airhostesses Training as an exclusive cabin crew partner.
“As per the contract, which is for an initial period of two years, only Frankfinn students will be recruited as cabin crew by the airlines with up to 400 placements guaranteed each year during the contract,” Frankfinn Chairman K S Kohli said.
“It will save us the recruitment costs and also help us earn revenue for the in-flight training we will provide to the students under the agreement,” Air Deccan Managing Director Captain G R Gopinath said here. On being asked about the financial aspects involved in the agreement, Frankfinn CEO said, “We have shelled a lot of money for the in-flight training to be provided by Air Deccan.”
The airlines also plans to outsource pilots in the near future. “Outsourcing helps us save money. We are in talks with some aviation academies to recruit pilots. For catering, we have already signed an agreement with Cafe Coffee Day.
The airlines which claims to have a market share of 21.6 per cent, targets to break-even by December. “I am confident that the airlines will enter profitability by December quarter this year,” Gopinath said.
The no-frills airline, which carried about 5.5 million people, expects to take the number to eight million passengers by the end of its fiscal year in June. The number will further rise to 12 million in the next fiscal, he said.
Air Deccan, whose 80 per cent routes are to non-metro cities, is planning to connnect additional number of smaller cities. “We need to connect the unconnected parts of the country to the metros at low cost fare,” Gopinath said.
“We are in talks with Maharashtra government to add 10 cities on the Air deccan list, he said.The airlines is also starting Delhi-Shimla and Delhi- Surat flights from April 16 and May 1 respectively. It is also planning to link Jamshedpur and Ludhiana to metro cities.
