As the thread title says, how often are these approaches used nowadays?

Thank you in advance
Regards,

NDB approached are still popular in Africa, parts of Russia etc. But in India they have almost disappeared.
But some exceptions are NDB/ILS approaches. In them the initial approach is conducted with the NDB and the final approach using the ILS. Example : VOCI Locator ILS R27.

PS: I do remember doing an NDB approach [Locator Approach] in VECC back in Aug '08

A lot of airports have published NDB approaches. But hardly anyone uses it.

Yeah..The ILS Y 27 approach.
On a different note COK seriously needs a radar. It can get pretty crappy when the traffic gets heavy.
Have to pass level, distance and radial every few seconds to the controller.
And with no radar that 15 mile out procedure is a real waste of time and fuel. Its common to get your clearance changed at least 2-3 times during peak traffic.
I was told they were supposed to get a radar this year..but doesnt seem like it.

Very true..most airports have a published NDB approach but its hardly used.In fact BLR and HYD dont even have an NDB.

The AAI has published a NDB procedure for VOTK but we rarely use it.Its mostly visual approach at VOTK.

Tell me about it. We all take a deeeeeeeeeeeeep breath before making the initial call to the ATC and before you know it, they would have extracted your biodata from you Wink

But you cant blame them also as they have to do procedural control in such situation. But from what i heard, their radar might be operational by Aug '11

Only done 1 NDB (locator) approach ever (not training) ..... in CCU ..19R me thinks?
The actual distance/altitudes were different from the chart Smile
It was a lot of fun actually- then again the weather was good.

Never heard anyone else give it, or ppl ask for it (I wonder why...)

There are a lot in Africa.
Have done plenty of them in Nigeria, as ILS often failed.
Russia as well quite a few, but the mayor APs al got good working ILS.
Remember QNH/QFE Settings in RUSSIA!
