I am reaching Dubai on 6th Aug at 00:35 and have an onward flight on 7th Aug at 03:00, which means I have a 24 hr stay in DXB. Any recommendation to hotels that would charge me for 24 hrs instead of 2 days stay? Basically check in at around 2 AM and check out at around 11:30 PM.

It seems that your transit time is more than 24 hours. If you are traveling on Emirates, they offer complimentary hotel stay, transit visa and airport transfer.

I don't know how transit times are measured. If they measure till the time of check in then just inform them before you fly from the origin that your transit is more than 8 hours and less than 24 hours and they will do the rest. Here is the link..

Ooh - that's a long stopover - I presume this is intentional to get some time in DXB? Otherwise with EK's multiple banks to India, there must surely be a more conveniently timed flight?

You'll probably take 24 hours to walk out of the jetway to the exit, trust me, a DXB longtimer. Laughing

I am planning to stay for a day in Dubai to keep my UAE residence visa valid.

The issue is with the the check in/ check out times for most hotels. Was wondering if any hotel charged otherwise.

The problem kinda got solved by itself. Took the 13:20 EK flight to BOM instead and had to spend only a day in DXB.

This was my first time exiting out of T3 and I was mighty impressed!! And to think tht all this is just stop gap, until Jebel Ali opens up!! Just WOW!! Immigration did not take much time. My flight from GLA arrvd at a remote stand and we were bussed. One interesting observation was the number of people taking a left turn (to immigration/arrival) v/s those taking a right turn towards transfers. I had to wait for a friend and saw three busloads of people , abt 20 of whom moved to immigration and the rest connecting!! Similar numbers from the MAN and Newcastle flights.
Most of the crowd seemed headed down under, with the desi crowd headed to India/Pak/Bangladesh.

A strange observation on my flight from GLA. Something I have never seen before on a flight!!



There were abt 3-4 such signs in my section of the 773!! Smile

The flight from DXB to BOM was quite eventful. They ran out of non-veg meals midway thru a flight that was around 50-60% full. Turns out very few opted for the veg option, which they had loaded in gr8 numbers!! But what impressed me was the chief stewardess, personally came to each passenger, apologized and offered them meals from the return sector and the crew meal!!

The pilot was a different case altogether. Midway through the meal service, we experienced some "drink spilling, gut wrenching, arm rest squeezing" turbulence. The captain came on the PA and in a tone very similar to "Iceberg Right Ahead" on Titanic, asked all the F/As to terminate service, return to seat, pax to return to seat with a plethora of "please" , "immediately" and "right now". More than the turbulence that lasted a coupla minutes, the paranoid pilot scared even the most seasoned traveller!! To be frank I had the images of an AF 332 flashing through my mind!! Would have been much better if the pilot had announced the same thing in a more flat and calm tone.

While landing, the forward cam was on, in the cabin screens, while visibility was real bad and cross wind was visible, the nose cam seemed to be veering of the center line of the rwy. abt 10 sec from touch down, the runway disappeared, from the cam view and when we finally landed we could see the AI M/X hangers, almost bang ahead!! And what a landing tht was... the hardest that I have ever experienced!! Overhead bins and the side bins in the aft came loose and open, with some bags tumbling down. luckily no one was injured. (Was hoping there would be some Aaj Tak/HT news reporter who would cover this "harrowing experience" and the "miraculous escape"!! Smile )

P.S. - I am itching to write a full fledged TR. But carrying my current camera onboard is a pain. Hoping to lay my hands on a mini-one. The pic taken above was from a cam borrowed from my friend.

Always use your cellphone camera. It's the least suspicious to the security guys. Click Click Click, done.

True, but it is a problem on board!! Smile Have run into trouble with a 9W F/A on tht.
