NEW DELHI, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The Indian Air Force (IAF) is building its third airbase in Ladakh, India-controlled Kashmir, the semi-official Press Trust of India reported on Tuesday.

Indian Air Force officials told the news service that work on the Neoma airbase is going on and would be made operational this year.

The airfields are being revived for defense purposes but officials said that they would also use them for tourism purposes to cater to future tourist inflow in the mountainous territory.

Air Marshal P. K. Barbora said a new Advanced Landing Ground is coming up at Neoma in east Ladakh which could be converted into a full fledged runway for the future tourism requirements in the region.

Barbora is the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Indian Air Force's Western Air Command in New Delhi.

Ladakh is the gateway to the highest battlefield in the world, Siachen Glacier. India is contemplating the glacier for tourist pursuits.

Last year Daulat Beg Oldi or Fuk Che airbases were built by the Indian Air Force in Ladakh. The Neoma airbase would be the third airbase in the Ladakh with the Chushul airfield in the Ladakh region being the oldest air base of the IAF.

J and K, to the extent i believe has no permanent squadron based there except 113HU- Siachin Pioneers. In all probability, these bases will be transport bases ideally used for supplies to our troops.

Cheers
