'Farewell flight' panics Australians

People flee tall buildings as low-flying jets scream past

Dozens of high-rise office tower workers in Sydney, Australia, ran into the streets Monday as what looked like a commercial jet being chased by an air force fighter flew low across downtown streets and the city's fabled harbour.

Later, it emerged that the country's air force had staged the fly-past as a farewell ceremony for the last of its Boeing 707 jets.

Witnesses told local media they thought a Sept. 11-style attack might have been taking place.

"It would have been nice to know that this incident was planned, rather than look out your window and see a low-flying passenger plane headed for your building," office worker Suzie Brook told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. "It was terrifying."

The four-engine Boeing jet was more than 40 years old, officials said, and was making its final flight as a military plane.

Witnesses said it was spewing smoke as it roared over Sydney's business district with a Hawk jet fighter close by.

The smoke was also part of the ritual farewell, it emerged, and a government spokeswoman told the Morning Herald that no harm had been done.

Sydney resident Robert Harriss said he and his colleagues would have appreciated a warning.

"It seems somewhat irresponsible for the [Australian] defence force to fly a large plane towards the city's largest office buildings," Harriss said.
