Giving affordable wings to Indians
Captain Gopinath needs no introduction. He is considered the father of low cost air travel in India. Some say he is a visionary; he created a whole new market when he launched India’s first low cost airline Air Deccan. Others say, he has the daring to enter a sector where even the Tatas failed. Even his competitors admit that he has succeeded in giving ordinary Indians wings. But what he is not known for is running a profitable and sustainable enterprise - at least not yet. So, does Captain Gopinath want to be a trailblazer or a successful entrepreneur?

I don't think the TATas were not successfull. They were not given a level field.
However its true Capt Gopinath has created history in Indian Aviation somewhat.

Well Gopinath did do something quite revolutionary. And even if DN disappears which I dont think will happen, Gopinath has already written his name in the history books.
BTW I believe LNM was interested in buying out IC when it was out for privatisation a few years back. Anyone know anymore on this?

Absolutely. Besides, this is not "self-proclaimed" - I'm yet to see an article where Capt. Gopi says "I'm the father of Low cost aviation". This is what the news paper article has called him.
Besides, do you want to call 9W or IC the "father of low cost travel" for India???? C'mon - Capt. Gopinath is the only one with a vision for air travel (may not have the best business vision, but that's another matter). |

Yes I was referring to Mittal. I was told by an IC captain that Mittal was interested in IC and Tatas in AI. _________________ Geniuses are always misunderstood in their lifetimes. |

See the thing is, when you are just buying a/c you are buying assets of the airline, but GoI wanted to sell the business not just the aircrafts. There is a difference, when you buy the business you buy everything about the business including all its liabilities. So if Tata bought the business they would have to pay for all the losses that IC had made.
On the other hand, GoI would not want to sell just the assets as it would not want to be responsible for the losses after selling of the assets.
Does that makes sense.

It was Venugopal Dhoot (Videocon), if not mistaken. His bid was a top qualifier for IA. Tata-SIA was for AI. |
