Dear friends,
I just find this great forum a couple of month ago (and this is my 1. post here) and immediately decided that my next plane hunting trip will be to India. In my last visit to India was impossible to take a photos of planes as it was in 1992.
I went through Vivek/VictorKilo thread and find some basic info regarding photo spotts in BOM - where I´m planing to spend some 2-3 days and than I want to go to some other indian airport (with commercial traffic of course ).
And my question is....how can I get to locations mentioned in previous Vivek´s thread: Jari Mari,Hotel Orchid,WE Highway,Vakola. And second question is...which other airport/airports in India are best for a/c photography.
I´ll be more than happy to meet new friends and have some great photo/spotting experiences.
I´ll be coming to BOM on Feb 28th so I´ll be around BOM airport on 29th and 1st than I want to go for a day or two to some other place...MAA?...please help.
Thank you very much for any suggestions.
Best regards,
Honza |

Hey Honza - BLR has a good spotting location this month and the next until the current airport shuts down and traffic moves to VOBL. Unfortunately though BLR is mainly narrow bodies during the day time hours. |

Nimish, this time we did have some issues, the owner of the building, came and shouted at for going there without permission. Next time, we want to spot, we have to speak to this guy, who happens to sit on the 1st floor of the building in question. _________________ My Flickr photos

I've got no plans right now for spotting on the 2nd March, but I guess something can be worked out ! The caveat is that spotting is not easy in India, and even in BLR, we thought we had a "safe" location, but I've just learned that even that place is at risk. So it might just be that you're here but can't really spot. |

You have to be careful at Jari Mari coz i had a cop take a swing at me with his cane, it grazed my calf. The buggers sneak up on you from the mosque and as alok said it has become quite a bit tough...good luck though |

Well what has occured is BS. They should have a police presence but spotting should be allowed with their security. Why not make a secure zone or fencing for spotting and the cops can have a register where the spotters can enter their in and out times. That would be more professional and would deter the bad guys to an extent. Nobody would mind evem if they charge a nominal fee, say 5 or 10 rs. to cover the cost for additional security. Also may be a food stall inside.

Out here the rules have not been changed yet & the cops are vary,as there have been terrorists clicking areas of Mumbai before a planned strike.
An Airport should have a viewing gallery.Do we?

Yeah! It won't be a bad idea for all the Indian airports to have a viewers gallery.Earlier there used to be viewers gallery in Bangalore airport and they used to charge Rs20 per head.
But once when new carriers started their operations, the authorities were forced to close it down and instead construct offices for the new airlines.
The new airports should have a separate building for viewers gallery in which people can view takeoffs and landings clearly. There shouldn't be a problem for the airport authorities, to allow viewers to carry cameras with them ,as there will be seperate enterance.Having viewers gallery would only help authorities to generate revenue. _________________ www.flickr.com/G-BYGB photos |

Well if every spotter is checked and searched before entering the gallery, how could it be a problem. As of now they are not doing that. |

Hi all.
I met up with Honza on Friday night and we went for a few beers.... he found Jari Mari on Fri morning by himself after arriving.... the local cops gave him a chat and told him to come back the next morning with a "gift" but not money....
So we went out at 9am and photographed from Jari Mari til our heaarts were content for a good few hours... there wer no cops and the local came back out of uniform for his gift....
As you may know Indian Al came in with a 320 with the main gear doors down and blocked the runway so we took the opportunity to go to Orchid rooftop.... lots of British spotters on an organised trip... but just after we got there the runway opened again.
On Sun we again made an early start for Jari Mari and had no problems for 5 hours.... moving round as the sun moved.... and another spell at the Orchid...we then explored Vakola but didn't get into the slums.... there is a great area beside Jet hangar but we were politely asked to leave as it was Indian Navy grounds... no hasstle and very nice people.... we then went to the area beside 27 threshold into the slums beside the Mithi.... great for landing shots and no problems at all.. just loads of local kids and a very enjoyable afternoon.
Very surprised NOT to see any local spotters out over the weekend... and if there were then why not introduce yourselves! _________________ If it isn't broke - then dont try to fix it! |
