Buying a new lens or camera is a nightmare.
The QC of manymanufacturers are not great and you may end up buying a brandnew lens but not a good "copy". I always do a lot of testing with a brand new lens or camera and return it if I find even a small issue.
When I bought my 300D, it was actually 3rd copy and 350D 2nd copy. More important for lenses, I have returned an L lens of focus problems and bought a non "L" lens. It could be the problem of the lens or camera.
Even lately I returned a tamron lens as its focussing was worse than the kit lens in the same range.

I know some users in this forum are having such issues. So, I'm posting a link to evaluate their equipment. ( there are some others on the web, I found this easy)
