I was reading the other thread. I could see a not so, but I would say a healthy, competition.

The point of thread being a motivation for photogs being listed as a photographer in the websites. A.net/JP.net.
A.net requires 50 pics and JP 100.
We could talk all day about quality but in the end it is quantity. Let it be number of pictures or number of hits.

The fact that the shot gets accepted takes care of the quality aspect. If the screeners say it is good, then it must be good. Now only difference is between quality of A.net and JP.net, A.net is better but not by much, they would reject any good picture with no problems just to give a feel that the standards are high. Jp is also at times guilty of this.
So, let me start the list (in no order)

1. Vivek
2. Vishal
3. Birendra
4.Yash
5.Gaurav
6. "r"

and any others I missed.
Also Nitin has a special place. He is a little "Sam Chui" of India with all those rare shots. I guess you all know Sam Chui, he is one of the most envied photog of A.net.

I would like to know how many shots the above photogs have on these websites(A.net/JP)

Thanks for the honour, C-GHKR of the ranking given by you.

I actually am just happy with being in league with such stalwarts. Though i may not be able to match up with their quality and quantities, their contribution of pictures gives me a high altogether.

I agree absolutely & in complete terms of the message that C-GHKR & Biren are trying to put accross.
On legacy sites like JetPhotos.net & Airliners.net one would only upload their best-of-the-best shot, both in terms of quality & the appeal of the photo.
Not at all getting carried away in the moment but in pleasent confidence I like to assure you that by the time the year is out I would be at around (or close to) 50 photos on JetPhotos.
Airliners.net on the other hand is a different story altogether.
A.net actually annoys/baffles me with their "standards"

To give you an example : Here is one of my photos on JP

Air-India Boeing 747-412 VT-AIF "Ellora" - http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=6010359&nseq=9

Now I uploaded this exact same JPEG file/image onto Airliners.net, a week or so later i get a rejection mail stating the following reasons :-

1. Level
2. Grainy

So I went ahead and started from scratch, edited it better than before & uploaded it. A week or so later i get another rejection mail stating the following reason :-

1. Soft.

And i'm still scratching my head about it.

No ranking there. Just a random list. I dare not say one is better than the other. Wink
Ranking would be upto members themselves and each could have different lists.

LOL, it is not easy and you wouldn't believe if I told you that some of my shots rejected by JP were accepted on A.net.

You have the skill, but the only thing limiting you could be your equipment (not discouraging you).

But you have proved that you could get shots accepted with your Casio camera and to be honest, I was surprised. Well done! The picture quality/editing was excellent.

End of the day, the screeners are human beings. There is bound to be some degree of variance when it comes to decisions taken. I have had some perfectly good shots rejected while some not so perfect ones accepted.

Also, their threshold for common aircraft is much higher as compared to uncommon/rare aircraft. It is easier to get average shots of rare/new aircraft accepted as compared to good shots of common aircraft.

This is something I wanted to mention before but forgot while typing.

Rare shots, new a/c type etc. an avg. quality would be acceptable in A.net. I was surprised when my AC 77W's were accepted cos I thought they weren't so great, but they were quite new to the database.

Just carrying this conv from the prev thread to this one for more related relevance,
C-GHKR wrote:
How is it like at night time? Do you guys carry a tripod? Is it possible to get a still a/c picture before take off etc.?

Well Me, Sean & Yash went to VT & Churchgate 2 days ago to buy a tripod for myself & Yash (as Sean was just gifted one by his uncle).
And I bought a relatively inexpensive & decent 4 Ft (extendable to 5 Ft) tripod for myself, Yash didnt want to buy what i took so he'll be buying some other tripod from Alfa in a few days time.
Since I had an off from work today, Me & Sean were ready as usual but for Yash as his dad is rightly concerned for him, wouldn't normally allow Yash out late in the night but i spoke with Mr. Rajgor on the phone & assured him of his son's safety.
So with that done Yash Airways was cleared by home ATC for take-off and he had in store for him an entire galaxy of heavies to marvel at & as he just told me when we wrapped up, "My best experience yet !!"
Which kinda describes in part the magical views.

About still pictures, it is only possible if the aircraft waits on taxiway A4 (which is right in front of us) as a moving a/c is next to impossible to click at night, which is the reason for me getting the tripod as earlier, i had to struggle to find a clear rock to place my cam on & put it on a 2 sec timer so tht i can avoid a blur as a result of the shake/movement of the cam when you'd click.

Now hopefully with that sorted i look forward to lot many heavenly moments as well as sharing most of them with you all through the photos.

Even using flash or even 2/3 flash guns wont help, as the airplanes are at a distance and then there are soo many cross lights flashing all over.
What using flash will do is attract attention from a couple of corners :
1. The Guard Post to our left (beside the runway)
2. The Guard Post to our right (beside Taxiway A4)
3. The Patrol vehicles & so on.........
Actually the patrol vehichles do often come by & stand right up below the hill overlooking us & scan us for any signs of trouble, once they are content they move on doing their rounds.
And only Sean knows asto how much that angers me Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad as we've missed clicking a lot of heavies, as the patrol guys were spotting us at that time, so while we are being watched we are nonchalant, casual & behave like a couple of ol' timers meeting up after a long time Wink Wink
Its just that in the day time there are a few people there anyways & since they can see u clearly from a distance there's no real hassle as such & either ways since i'm there so often there's a friendly recognition with a few gaurds whom i'd normally say hello or exchange a smile & a waive.

Night phtography of aircraft is particularly difficult. I tried with my tripod this time in BOM, but the pics were shitty because it was too windy, and my lenses were also not the best for night photographs.

I would recommend atleast a F2.8 lens for any decent night shot. Ofcourse that doesnt mean that pics with other lenses will be shitty it just makes it easier.

Oooh boy! what an amazing time we had out there in the night! 4 hrs of pure heavies Very Happy .....But too bad i didn't have a tripod Sad ......Sometimes even a tripod doesn't help due to the gusty winds out there....and naah we never click with our flash on because it doesn't hrlp as the aircraft are too far from us....Thanks to Sean for providing refreshments on this expedition Very Happy

LOL! Flash is used for subjects within a couple of meters. The flash cannot light up an airplane far away.
