Why is that? From what I know S10 has no shutter, aperture or manual modes like canon. Also noise levels of canon are usually lower.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikons10/page12.asp S10 just misses a Recommended rating.
while all the canon SxIS series are highly recomended.

As for the polls, if you want the picture to be accepted in A.net, it would be much easier with a Dslr than with a p&S provided you have the basic editing skills.

As a guy planning to switch to a DSLR from a P&S, I would say that DSLR is better for spotting.

The real difference in addition to the quality of photos (depending on the photographer, but gives a better base to start from) is the absence of any shutter lag (the lag between when you press the shutter and when the actual pic is taken). It makes a real difference in spotting aircraft, when they are air borne.

Well C-GHKR, personally, If I am buying a $300 camera, I would like to be more useful overall. So the form factor also plays a significant role.
I did not look at S3/5 in detail. But I was not quite impressed with S2. (maybe because being an Olympus owner was biased slightly biased towards it. Olympus was quite ahead in the game for ultra zooms by the time S2 came out.)

One of the major factor question, I always ask if one is going to Niagara Falls can you enjoy out there without being much worried for the camera. In that aspect I would definitely go to Nikon S4/S10 over Canon S3/S5.

Also personally if one wants to go into DSLRs with a interest in photography (rather than I want an DSLR so I can take pics of my kid at the right moment) would definitely recommend (and followed that) to go with D80 or XTi rather than D40 etc.

The form factor is better for sure for a 10x in Nikon Smile
