Boeing and Virgin Atlantic Announce 787 Order, Environmental Partnership

CHICAGO, April 24, 2007 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Virgin Atlantic today announced an environmental partnership, which includes an order for 15 787-9 Dreamliners, marking the largest 787 order to date for Europe.

The order, worth approximately $2.8 billion at list prices, was previously listed on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries Web site and attributed to an unidentified customer. The order also includes options for an additional eight 787-9s and purchase rights for an additional 20 787s.

Sweet looking plane there. I'm glad that SRB got out of the "4-engines-4-longhaul" rubbish and has chosen what seems like the best plane out there today.

Man, the 787 is selling like hot cakes! Absolutely brilliant progress.

Seems like Branson wanted incentives for the A350 which he was denied and so he decided to go for the 787s...

I saw SRB's interview on CNN.

He says Virgin took 787 cause it was a good airplane but there was a big but - he said 'If Airbus came with a better plane they would go back to airbus'

A350 still has a chance.

I'am Surprised . to see Richard Branson favouring boeing over airbus. For a change it is good to see him going for boeing b coz they are making good type of acfts than airbus.

What use would a "me-too" plane be if it launches years after the 787 is already in service? The 350 would have a great chance if they offered fundamental improvements over the 787 or offered it at much lower prices, but so far it seems like Airbus is having a tough time even matching what the 787 has to offer. The 380 is taking all their attention (and rightly so considering the delays that have happened).

Nimish i'd say we're not experts out here, maybe Airbus MIGHT come up with a better technology in its A350...
(isn't this getting into a A vs B war Wink )

No A vs. B war - I am least interested in that Very Happy

But consider the fact that VS did not even have the 350 in the reckoning. And consider the 550+ sold for the 787 vs. much smaller numbers for the 350. While we don't have the info, I'm sure SRB had the info, and so did all the current airlines ordering the 787 Confused

Another blow to airbus this week. This time it is from US airways.According to the TIMES,US airways has decided to withdraw $3.7 billiion order of A350 in favour of the 787 dreamliner. It'll be between 20 and 30 in numbers. The deal will be worth between $3.2 and $4.9 billion at list prices. This latest move from US airways comes after VS's preference of the dreamliner.

So A350 is loosing out badly to B787 as of now. This trend is gonna last for a long period of time.

But seriously speaking i find the A350 XWBBHJKJFYY..... (blah!!) a very useless project... i mean they could have come up with something like A330-400 or A330-500 with similar capabilities of what they're promising for the A350... atleast that would not give them such limelight about a "new" project and also keep them under lesser pressure and they could focus more on the A380 till the A380 is on its autopilot..
this way actually works, we had tried out in our school for some projects...

Heheheh I hope most airline executives think that....

Virgin has over 10 744s

The 787 has a big advantage over the 350, and it’s not merely technical. It’s the timeline. Carriers can get their hands on a 787 years before the a350. Even if the a350 can effectively compete with the 787 (I believe it will) airlines will have to wait another 7 years or so to press them into service. Thats a hugeeeeeeee consideration.

I disagree, the a350/787 type aircraft is the future. XWB whatever that’s just marketing, but they need an aircraft to replace the 330 (lets not even mention the 340)
Boeing have the 777 and the 787 and have more or less stopped the 767-747

Airbus have the 330 and 340. the 330 is a fine aircraft for now, but will be inefficient when the 787/350 come out. 340 = built for a previous generation.
I don’t think an upgraded 330 will do, it wont offer the fuel efficiency and other advantaged that the 787 offers. If airbus put serious effort into the 350 and sped things up they wouldn’t be losing orders to Boeing left right and center.

Currently the Advantage commonly known to Buyers is that the B787 will be ready before the A350.In case the B787 delivery is delayed due some reason. You will see orders getting cancelled.

How about an upgraded A330 which offers SAME features as the A350 and NOTHING called as the A350.

I think the B787s advantage lies with use of Composites & Bleedless Engines.Providing greater Range.

It honestly doesn’t matter (at all) what they call it, the airlines wont care if it’s called a350 or a3whatever.

As I said, a minor 'upgrade' is insufficient. They will have to design new wings (huggggggeeeeeeeeee deal), new wing box, new empennage, control surfaces- heck a new flight deck, composites and the engine manufacturers will have to come up with something.
The designated name for the project or its final name doesn’t matter. Airlines want to know (among other things) when they can fly it, how many pax it will carry, how far it will go and how much fuel it will consume.

In order to achieve what they promised, the manufacturers will have to come up with a new aircraft.
