Reliance Communications Ltd (RCL), Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) and Sify Ltd have started planning and setting up wireless-data networks using the so-called Wimax technology in more than 200 cities.
RCL will roll out up to 3,000 base stations in 25 cities by the end of the year; the Tata-run VSNL is in the process of erecting 1,300 wireless broadband towers for retail consumers in five cities; and Internet service provider Sify is working on what it calls a micro-cell-based wireless broadband network for its consumer foray.

This is good news, provides a way around the current last mile hurdles unique to India. Of course it remains to be seen how well WiMax can crack through our concrete and brick walls, and high density of construction. Experience with WiFi has been pathetic given the non-porous nature of our walls.
