Intriguing...what about Sarla Thukral? Or was Sarla Thukral the first Indian lady to get her wings, whereas Mrs. Sen was the first to fly an aircraft: either as a pilot, or as a passenger?
Thanks, Sumantra. |

Thanks Pal ! Earlier this year I visited "Tolly Club", where the golf course is. I saw no mention of this historic event happening there. Sad, but it's pretty much been forgotten. Hopefully this will help educate a few. I'm just bracing for impact, when people from each community in India now come forward to say that it was one of theirs, who was the first pilot, years before this or even the Wright brothers' event. I know the marathis & madrasis are in the forefront of such BS. Anyways, lets celebrate this day and feat. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Thanks, Sumantra. | 747-237: please tell us more about your Tolly Club visit (did you see this place picturised inthe photos, or has this changed, totally?), and perhaps try to throw a bit more light on Mrs. Sen, above.
Cheers, Sumantra. |

Sumantra, like most of India, not much remains of the days of our colonial past. "Tolly Club" (or "Talee Klaab" in the local llingo) & its golf course, is nothing like in the pictures above. It still maintains its colonial grandeur, but its all relative, I guess.
In terms of aviation firsts, there is absolutely no knowledge amonst the locals or mention that Juhu in Bombay, was India's first airport. Likewise, there is no mention that the first flight in India was out of Tollygunj.
As for Mrs. Sen, I guess I'll need to dig further and leave that post for another time. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

You have a penchant for the extra-ordinary, digging up gems of knowledge and trivia, which make regular visits to this site, completely worth it. Thank you very much!

Careful Sumantra.....some of the bloggers, aviation anal-ysts and a(-i.net)holes here may crucify you for that comment !
Anyways, your compliments are to be rewarded, as always.
Not the first flight out of golf course at Tolly Club (so slightly off-topic, I confess), but an Air Fiesta at the other airport I mentioned - Juhu, Bombay; 1929.

What a surprise!! I lived all my childhood within stone’s throw distance from
that place but nobody told me about this!! Is this event older than flight from the artillery fields of DUM Dum cantonment? What I heard from my earlier generation was; loyal British subjects (desis) living in nearby south Calcutta were very much interested in aviation field. They were encouraged by British master to have their own planes and build their private aerodrome. This is how Behala airport came up by land lords (Roys) of Behala. Nearby other families send their sons in RAF and thus early officer corps of till nonexistent RIAF was born. The first desi DFC Flt. Lt. Indra nath Roy is from this area near Bhabanipore . Still there is a road by his name who was killed in 1917 by German AF. Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee, Wing Cmdr. K.K Majumdar, and 1965 war hero Flt. Lt. Tapan Chatterjee are all from this broad area of south Calcutta. But none of them were fortunate enough to fly in style like JRD Tata and thus forgotten anyway. God bless them! _________________ Sabya99 |
