|
|
9W- 302, DEL-BOM. VT-JGC, Boeing 737-900 24th September 2016
So the saga begins when Jet Airways sends me a mail announcing that I would be able to sample their new Wireless In-flight Entertainment product- JetScreen on my next DEL-BOM flight... I had already been made aware by other AI.net members about the impending launch of the service and was looking forward to trying it out someday, but this was totally unexpected. UK had already been beta-testing its wireless IFE on a couple of planes but hadnt officially launched it. 9W had announced their Wireless system only a few days back. With this, Jet Airways pips Vistara in being the first Indian carrier to properly launch W-IFE systems on board their aircraft
The 9W mail advises to prepare for the experience by downloading the Airtime Player app. So i downloaded it onto my iPhone 6 and also tossed my larger Beyerdynamic headphones into my laptop bag. (to better isolate the sound)
This work related trip itself has been a rushed affair and I apologise for not penning down a complete TR. However, since this was my first experience of Wireless IFE in the indian skies, here goes a super short report of the Experience.
First indication of what awaits you on board is this sign on the inside of the aircraft. Placed above eye level, you cannot miss it while boarding from Door 1L. (The sign tickled my OCD for being oddly positioned, though)
Announcements were made about the service when the plane levelled off after take off. don't know how many people actually used the service. The first thing you need to do is select the wifi and then open the app. (on phones and tabs)
The app navigates easily. I chose to see the flight tracker feature first before diving into entertainment.
Not on a 330, though....
The look and feel is identical to the standard JetScreen product.
Some games, which I didn't venture into..
Music Playlists
After a cursory glance at the offerings, I settled in for a Hollywood flick. Streaming was perfect. No jitters or buffering. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie. My companion tried JetScreen from his Asus Tab. He hadnt pre-installed the app and hence could access only some amount of content from the server.
The Icon below the movie 'Fan', indicates that the movie can only be watched via the app. The others could be watched within the browser itself.
I had carried along my Beyerdynamic Headphones (which shut out outside sound) and also used an external power source (my laptop) to continuously top up my phone battery while watching the movie, else a drained out battery is a sure possibility.
As one can see from the pics, the actual time available on the IFW was around 1 hr 30 mins.. Not the entire duration of the flight like the 'back of the seat' IFE, because the wifi only comes on above 10,000 feet. I hope that the wifi continues to deliver the same high speeds once majority of the travellers latch on to the concept!
Cheers! |

What a lovely TR, GF1011! This is called being at the right spot and the right time, and more importantly, sharing this TR with us at the right time
Lovely pictures, and descriptions of your experience. Jet will not get power-ports on the narrow-body fleet in the near future, at least, so this will be a bit terse to enjoy, without enough battery juice. It is nice of Jet however, to introduce this novelty in the Indian skies and pip Vistara to it.
I wonder if AI will bite the bullet. They have tested WiFi informally even in the late 2000s, so they could do it, if they wanted to. I'll look forward to that.
And of course, regular lovely TRs from you!
Cheers, Sumantra. |

Was excited to try this out in my flight today. But turns out, not all 737s have this facility as of now |

Nice on TriG!
I look forward to Jet investing more in this service over time, but sad that the IFE/PTV screens will be history _________________ http://www.youtube.com/c/JishnuBasu777 |

Thank you Sumatra.
I think everyone except me carries a power bank on them these days Im hoping once people discover the joy of viewing content on their own devices (retina display et al on the iPad!), everyone will carry extra juice on board!

9W sent me a mail a few days before the flight, informing me of the W-IFE feature onboard, with instructions on how to use the product (download the app, etc). So watch out for that before your next 9W flight!

While a power bank may still be ok for domestic flights in India, there is no chance they will work for longer flights. This makes power-ports a must.
