Excellent pictures - you guys have a great crowd of intl heavies leaving BOM in the afternoon - including the 9W/AI/PK/BA/VS heavies shown. I thought the 9W 77W and the PK 747 were the best looking of the lot! |

I am as close to runway as you can make out. There is a meter high barbed fencing that seperates the road from airfield, but is not clearly visible in the photo as it is in slight depression. The photography is pretty relaxed so long as you are outside the airport premisis, and also being a member of Airport Watch Group also helps.
One the other hand, this particular runway is rarely used for variety of reason and also that road being within the airport compound (cargo terminal), you can't stand there for extended period of time. Here is link with placemark at exactly where I was standing. http://tinyurl.com/35zy6y

It is a way of regularizing aviation enthusiasts and photographers....not allowed inside the compound as we are not security, but otherwise have IDs and marked caps and jackets... _________________ [url=http://openflights.org/user/aseemsjohri]

Interesting.
But how do you control people not within the group or is that not the groups responsibility.
How large is this group.

even if you are not a member of the group, you are free to take photos. Its just membership gives certain amount of security and responsibility. As I said, it is basically a way of regularizing enthusiasts and photographers. Its different though that we have organized tours once in a while. Like I have toured YYZ ATC and Bombardier facility in Toronto. Got other opportunities a well, but didn't go due paucity of time. On Bombardier trip, it would have been better had you gone instead of me. BTW! The group must be around 125-150 people and we underwent background checks before enrollment.

We don't have to control any body. Memebership of the group doesn't give any more access than the lay man (non members).
It shows your are a genuine enthusiast ( plus a volunteer keeping an eye for safety) when approached by the Police or security. The only sevice we are supposed to do is to alert the authorities (call them by telephone) when we see something wrong in the airport area. We don't have any authority to directly interact/confront with any person or control them. |

With my regular night tifs within the Tarmac against Rule breakers from other Airlines is enough for Me.Thanks.
About Spotters in India having a group as such.It will be difficult to start such a group as Spotting in this country is not common as its abroad.
Hopefully one day it will.

To have something of that requires cooperation from the airport operater, AAI, BCAS and Civil Aviation Ministry and now the question who will bell the cat ie visit all these institutions and ask for a photography permits to photograph planes around the vicinity of the airport. _________________ Expeditors- You'd be surprised how far we will go for you www.expeditors.com |

Nitin and Mel, thanks for your nice words.
4 in a row, its been years when that happened .
I remember when I started out I had 3.2mp P&S camera and manged to get over a 30 accepted with it, which certainly wouldn't have made it with today's anet standards. Now a better a camera and still higher/strict screening, things haven't got any easier. The whole acceptance ratio concept is a humiliating thing especially when it falls from 80's to really embarassing levels. |

Aseem,I wish they would allow to take photos so close to the acft in India as well like the one you and Santosh took in Canada.
Jeeeezzz me!Wonder why the airport authorities in India get so paranoid in pax taking picts of acft. Whts that got to do with security problem?
Every int'l airports in the world allow us to take some pics and they are security tight. _________________ www.flickr.com/G-BYGB photos |
