India's Blue Dart Aviation to operate B757 freighter for DHL

Blue Dart Aviation (BZ, Chennai) will operate a B757-200, msn 28718, on behalf of its affiliate parent, DHL Express, following the aircraft's conversion into a B757-200(F). The former Thomas Cook Airlines UK (MT, Manchester Int'l) twinjet is currently undergoing conversion with TAECO Aircraft Engineering in Xiamen, China.

The aircraft is scheduled to join the Indian operator's fleet of five B757 freighters in early October.

Depending on demand, Mirchandaney said she expects to add another freighter by the end of the year. But like many 757 conversion customers, she laments that the feedstock for the popular aircraft will soon run out. “Unfortunately, there is no immediate replacement,” she said. “As they grow older, it would become necessary to explore other options, but for now it is clearly our preferred workhorse.”

She added that Blue Dart is “exploring the viability” of acquiring a 767 as a potential future alternative to the 757, but said that “widebody aircraft operations will present a huge challenge,” requiring across-the-board economic growth in all regions served by Blue Dart.

Blue Dart plans to purchase aircraft to increase air cargo cap

July 13, 2015

Logistics services provider Blue Dart Express plans to purchase an aircraft by November this year to raise its air cargo handling capacity.

"It is proposed to add one aircraft during November, 2015 to increase the air carriage capacity which will result in increased cost of operation. Such increase has been factored in the estimated value of the transaction from March 11, 2015 to March 31, 2016," Blue Dart said in the filing.

India's Blue Dart Express buys out Blue Dart Aviation

Indian integrated transportation and distribution firm, Blue Dart Express (BDE), says it has now taken full control of Blue Dart Aviation (BZ, Chennai) after it acquired the remaining 26% that it did not own.

In a filing with the Mumbai Stock Exchange, BDE said it completed the transaction on November 24, 2016.

Blue Dart Aviation operates six B757-200(PCF)s on scheduled cargo flights throughout India. One of the aircraft is dedicated to DHL Express services.

Blue Dart Aviation (BZ, Chennai) has said in a job advertisement that it will be expanding its fleet with an unspecified number of B737-800 freighters

The Indian cargo specialist did not disclose any further details and did not respond to ch-aviation's request for further information.

Blue Dart Aviation currently operates a fleet of six B757-200(PCF)s, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. The cargo specialist was an all-B737 carrier throughout the first two decades of its existence, when it operated up to five B737-200(F)s. It completed the B737's phase-out in 2014, replacing them with the B757s, the ch-aviation fleets history module highlights.

The carrier focuses on express freight operations connecting the major Indian cities of Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore Int'l, Delhi Int'l, Kolkata Int'l, and Mumbai Int'l. It is a subsidiary of Bombai Stock Exchange-listed Blue Dart Express logistics firm.

I don't know why this airline hasn't grown to be a big cargo operator in India, with so much of demand for cargo during and post pandemic. They are pretty much a small time operator with six leased 757s. They should have done much better with their door to door delivery capabilities and DHL's support.

It's a tragedy that Indian operators are unwilling to see the potential in cargo, when the likes of Emirates, Qatar and Lufthansa operate multiple B777F flights into India every day.

Blue Dart Aviation (BZ, Chennai) will add two B737-800 freighters by the end of the year and is also looking at acquiring widebodies to expand into the Asian market. The Indian cargo carrier currently operates six B757-200(PCF)s on an overnight express network that connects Delhi Int'l, Ahmedabad, Bangalore Int'l, Chennai, Hyderabad Int'l, Kolkata Int'l, and Mumbai Int'l.

Speaking during a recent earnings call, managing director Balfour Manuel said the incoming B737s' 18-tonne payloads would allow Blue Dart to start serving second- and third-tier Indian cities such as Guwahati, Coimbatore, and Kochi Int'l among others. It is also looking at increasing its charter operations to China and Vietnam given surging e-commerce demand.

In addition, Manuel told India's Economic Times that Blue Dart is also evaluating adding B767 freighters, which would be a 60% increase on the B757's freighter capacity.

Blue Dart is also planning to retire the B757s, which average almost 28 years old, in "a few years", he added.

Majority owned by DHL Express, Blue Dart saw its quarterly net profits jump by almost 400% to INR1.19 billion rupees (USD15 million) on revenue of INR12.93 billion (USD163 million).

Blue Dart Aviation to acquire two B737-800Fs

Blue Dart Aviation (BZ, Chennai) intends to purchase a pair of B737-800(F)s from sales alliance partner and major shareholder, DHL Express/Deutsche Post AG, Germany (DHL). The acquisition was flagged in a November 23 Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) filing and will cost Blue Dart approximately INR4.1 billion rupees (USD50 million).

In the filing, Blue Dart Express, parent company of Blue Dart Aviation, said the aircraft were essential if Blue Dart was to maintain its position as India's top domestic freight airline and to accommodate anticipated year-on-year annual cargo growth rates of 6%.

Blue Dart Aviation presently operates six B757-200(PCF)s, three of which are owned by the company and three which are leased from DHL. The German logistics company has been working with Blue Dart since 2002 and acquired an 81.03% stake in the business in 2005, since trimmed back to a 75% shareholding.

Blue Dart Aviation intends to fund the aircraft purchase from DHL Aviation (Netherlands) B.V with an INR2.5 billion (USD30.4 million) loan from DHL Logistics Private Ltd with the remainder being provided by parent company Blue Dart Express. The BSE filing gave notice of a shareholder vote on the matter. The result will be announced on or before December 26, 2022.
