http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/chen-society/chennai-is-on-asias-worst-airports-list-yet-again/article6524375.ece

Infrastructural issues have once again pushed Chennai airport to the list of worst airports in Asia in a survey conducted by a website.

This is the third year in a row that the city’s facility has appeared on the list of “Worst airports of Asia”, in the online survey conducted by the travel website The Guide to Sleeping in Airports.

The only solace is in the fact that from the fourth worst spot last year, the airport has advanced to the tenth worst this year.

In 2012, along with Chennai, New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata too had been rated poorly. But this year, no other airport from India has featured on this list.

In fact, the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi has been ranked as one of the best in Asia this year. Singapore’s Changi International Airport tops the list for the 18 year in a row.

As part of the survey, the website asked travellers to vote on four categories: comfort, convenience, cleanliness and customer service. A traveller in his review of Chennai airport said: “The gallery was cold and the chairs designed specifically with metal separators so you couldn’t lie across.”

The survey’s results criticised the airport for lack of cleanliness, long queues and lack of comfortable seating.

D. Sudhakar Reddy of Air Passengers Association of India said, “Even after the Civil Aviation Minister’s visit to the airport and his subsequent suggestions, one can hardly see any difference in the amenities. A lot has to be done to change the pathetic state of the airport.”

Alright, while MAA may not appeal as much as its other Indian counterparts, it certainly isn't among the 'worst airports in Asia'.

These polls should be taken with several pints of salt.

Too much publcity given . The website deals with "sleeping in airports". Go through the wesite and you will come to the same conclusion I have that we are just cribbing about nothing here.

I disagree with you. Have you seen the toilets there? Its as good as the ones on local trains. Oh wait, they don't have toilets, as good as the ones in Chennai. There are no proper food or tea/coffee options other than a Magii counter and cup-noodles, Seriously?! The security there is an absolute joke, so many x-ray machines and staff but the queues are massive! The lounger is fairly pointless since it in the opposite end of the gates unless you're flying an LCC.

It'll be quite a task for AAI to privatise the airport with the unions and shoddy construction.

I believe the airports are being ranked on a relative basis. Chennai may be ok by itself but loses out when compared to DEL, HYD, BLR, BOM etc.

4th Worst in Asia huh? Which means probably even the likes of Kabul, Mazar-e-Sharif, Peshawar, Chittagong and Yangon are better than MAA.

Some achievement that.

World’s worst airports:

1. Islamabad Benazir Bhutto International Airport, Pakistan

2. Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport, Saudi Arabia

3. Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal

4. Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Philippines

5. Tashkent International Airport, Uzbekistan

6. Paris Beauvais-Tille International Airport, France

7. Frankfurt Hahn International Airport, Germany

8. Bergamo Orio al Serio International Airport, Italy

9. Berlin Tegel International Airport, Germany

10. New York City LaGuardia International Airport, USA

The above airports were ranked world's worst, primarily for sleeping and general use. It appears that they only looked at major airports which handle a decent amount of international traffic. Chennai may be better than many airports in India and Asia, but the ranking is based on larger airports.

And to me it appears they are ranked by a bunch of users who are stingy enough to avoid using a overnight hotel room at any cost even if a cheap one is available down the road. The same website has in its reviews of another Indian airport one in which the reviewer rates the airport highly because while the security did not allow him/her to use the transit faiclities until three hours before flight departure, he/she found a wash room comfortable enough to sleep on!!!! I find the particular review distatestful so I am not giving the link here. I am also very familiar with the airport in question and you can easily get a perfectly acceptable hotel room at 15 t to 20 US$ very near the airport.

Come on - give a break. I dont know why "The Hindu" of all newspapers have to waste time with such reporting.

I second that . The problem with the bloody India Media is they will run down Indian Airports and Air India in a jiffy .

This is a totally unaccredited survey which is done by some random website . I just hope our media are more responsible in future .

I don't think any airport in the World is worth sleeping in. The survey itself is completely pointless.

There are several airports that I simply adore, but would never want to sleep in any of them.

Ranking aside, I would think Chennai International airport does handle decent amount of "international" traffic, much more than Islamabad, Kathmandu, Paris Beauvais .

Sure - but several others in the whole continent of Asia fare worse to deserve to make it in the list well behind MAA, and they handle as much traffic too, if not more.

Come to think of it, KWI handles more traffic than MAA and it's a shack pending renovation at best.

One of the daily affair of MAA and glass panels

Another glass pane falls off roof at Chennai airport

Quote:
Passengers had a narrow escape today when a glass pane fell from the roof close to them at the arrival enclave of international terminal in yet another such incident at the airport here.

Luckily, the five-feet pane did not fall on the passengers present in the immigration area, airport sources said.

This was the 28th such incident of glass panes, false ceiling and granite slabs falling off at the terminals built last year, they added.

Last month, Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju visited the airport following various complaints received by him through media and stakeholders regarding deficiencies in development of infrastructure as well as deficiency in maintenance standards.

Oops: I had thought that it was Calcutta's NSCBI airport that had the falling glass panels problem, which was scarily regular in its initial days, with just too many incidents, and Director B. P. Sharma's team at its wits' end, in trying to figure out why this was happening. If they figured it out, may be the solution could be replicated at Chennai as well. As people on this forum have long pointed out, there has been much in common between the airport terminals: the old ones, and the new ones as well (though the Calcutta one decided to go arrow-headed, and beside the old terminals, as opposed to the Chennai one growing across the current ones: which by far, was a nice idea, IMHO). And both are AAI-built and maintained. Glass panels (falling) apart, the Calcutta one had far more problems with its opening, signage, aero-bridges, washrooms, food-and-beverage options, retail outlets, and much more, as compared to the Chennai one. My personal opinion is that the classy Tagore handwriting theme apart, the Chennai one looks much better lit and maintained, at least on the surface (pun un-intended).
Cheers, Sumantra.

But Chennai made it to the Lonely Planet's top 10 cities to visit in 2015.

It is at number 9: after Vienna and before Toronto.

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/best-in-travel/cities/09-chennai

It was also in the New York Times places to visit in 2014.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/01/10/travel/2014-places-to-go.html

So maybe people do leave the airport and see what's out there Smile
