Looks like it is never going to be a smooth ride for Air Asia India

FIA seeks to stop AirAsia India launch
May 31, 2014 22:54 IST
Claiming that the approvals granted to AirAsia India were ‘illegal’, the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) has asked the government to advice the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)not to allow the new no-frill airline to launch its operations, which is set for June 12. “It is our request that the government advise the DGCA not to permit AirAsia India to proceed to fly, that too with merely one aircraft with the sole intent of making the decision (to let them fly) a fait accompli and difficult for the government to review,” the FIA, a grouping of Indian carriers, said in a letter to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
FIA will have to rely on Dr.Subramaniam Swamy to influence the Modi administration for denying the flying permission to Air Asia India. Right from the start, he has been the most firm person in not allowing Air Asia India to fly.
The question is will FIA prevail this time and pile on the agony for Air Asia India? _________________ www.flickr.com/G-BYGB photos |

From experience, the best and most reliable Volvos are the ones with KSRTC - and for BLR-MAA they cost upwards of Rs. 800/-
The Shatabdi costs a little less than Rs. 775/- and the Double Decker Rs. 480/-
Haven't heard of Sharma Transports, but if they're pitching a Rs. 400-odd/- fare then it's a steal. _________________ Yeah. |

It has been a while since I travelled them, but they were pretty good. You can check out their fares. They are in the 400-550 range, and around 700-800 for today's departures. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

To be considered to be a "national carrier", they still have the 5 aircraft rule. That and the 5 year/20 aircraft is still valid now. Only regional carriers can operate below 5 aircraft. So FIA is valid in its complaints. |

Air Asia India is still regional carrier I think. They are yet to apply for pan India licence. |

^^ I would imagine the DGCA will be all over this in no time - though I hope that the DGCA would leave pricing decisions to the airlines, and focus on getting back on Cat1 status with the FAA! _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Tickets for maiden AirAsia India flight sold out in 10 minutes
June 03, 2014
Tickets for AirAsia India's maidenflight from Bangalore to Goa were sold out within 10 minutes, the airline said. "AirAsia India sold out 25,000 promo seats within 48 hours of opening for bookings. The tickets for the first flight from Bangalore to Goa on June 12 were sold out within 10 minutes of opening for sales," the Chennai-based carrier said in a statement.
"We are very excited by the feedback we received from the market. Our motto has always been to make everyone fly and we have already begun to show that we are true to our promise," AirAsia India Chief Executive Officer Mittu Chandilya said. On May 30, AirAsia announced fares of Rs 990 inclusive of taxes for the maiden flight.

DGCA halts AirAsia India’s plan to charge fee on check-in baggage
June 4, 2014
Even as AirAsia India’s entry into the Indian aviation market is expected to herald a new round of fare wars, the Malaysia-based carrier’s plan to charge a fee for all check-in baggage has been red flagged by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The DGCA, on Tuesday, asked the airline to withdraw a number of proposed charges, including the one on check-in baggage, as these were introduced without informing the aviation regulator.
AirAsia, which is launching its flight between Bangalore and Goa on June 12, has done away with the concept of free check-in baggage of up to a certain minimum weight threshold and has, instead, introduced charges for all check-in baggage. The charge for any check-in baggage weighing up to 15 kg is Rs 199 (if paid during the time of ticket booking) and Rs 300 for up to 15 kg (if paid at the airport counter). All other low-cost carriers operating in the country offer free check-in baggage of up to 15 kg and full-service carriers offer up to 20 kg free check-in baggage.
“We have asked the airline to withdraw charges for baggage and other services which were introduced without informing us,” said a senior DGCA official. The official added that the airline representatives have also been summoned for a meeting on the issue on Wednesday.
While airlines in India have been allowed to unbundle services (charge for services), they have to inform the regulator before they introduce any such charge. In this case, AirAsia India did not inform the aviation regulator. A text message sent to the airline spokesperson on Tuesday evening did not elicit any response till the time of going to print. Industry players, however, feel that the charges are fine till they are transparent and the customers are aware of the same. |

Yes, this is not what the DGCA should be meddling with, but I like it in a perverse sort of way. If AirAsia runs away with this idea, it's all but a matter of time before every airline in the market (bar AI, perhaps) charge the same fee for any kind of hold luggage, be it FSC or LCC. _________________ Yeah. |

Why not charge for the 1st bag too. It is time the LCC's in India behave like LCCs. This is another way to get back to profitability for airlines. This will justify Jet and AI charging more for the ticket. |

I think the problem is that Jet and AI don't charge any more for their ticket than LCCs, or the latter charge as much for the ticket as the FSCs, whichever way you look at it. The lines between the two groups in the Indian skies is very blurred.
Take for instance, the fares offered for a random Saturday in July on one of the longest sectors in the country - BLR-DEL. Here are the carriers and fares as sorted in ascending order:

With the constant meddling from DGCA regarding baggage fees and premium seating, Air Asia India is finding out how tough it is to operate as a true low cost carrier in India. If they continue to offer very low fares (even that may be difficult as DGCA might force them to increase fares) but are unable to charge ancillary fees to the extent they want, they will soon be losing bucket loads of money.
As long as India has a government run airline - AI, we will have this DGCA rulings. |

These pictures reveal several open overhead bins. Was the plane in flight? A sudden turbulence can cause bags to fall out and injure people. An airline like Air Asia, who have had issues with getting clearances from the DGCA, should be careful. What if some over enthusiastic DGCA cutlet or one of Air Asia's competitors sees these pics and raises an alarm? _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

So their aircraft reg. is VT-ATF, and by all accounts it seems to be a factory fresh A320 complete with sharklets.
What happened to VT-ATA/B/C... though? Surely they were not all taken? Or is this a vanity thing like Kingfisher? _________________ Yeah. |

Vanity thing. The 'TF' in 'ATF' stands for Tony Fernandes. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

In the first pic- where it was receiving the cannon salute- the plane looked like an Embraer E Jet at first glance. How many agree ?? : |

I don't think so. It is the typical stubby A320 look from that angle.
The E-Jets look sleek from any angle. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

I wonder how much this matters, no Indian airline operates a hub and spoke structure out of any particular city, and the aircraft over a period of time are scattered all over the place too.
By the way, it is odd that I5 couldn't find the space for their singular (perhaps soon to be two) aircraft at MAA. _________________ Yeah. |

Not like that, actually.
I5 agreed to set up their base at MAA, provided they were given access to the old domestic terminal. They asked AAI to refurbish the entire terminal. But, AAI being typically sarkari, failed to make any progress on the old terminal. BIAL & the Govt of Karnataka stepped in and cashed on I5.... _________________ |
