UA has copied DL's revenue based earning miles system. This applies to all MP members worldwide. However elite qualification will still be based on distance travelled.
A big loophole is that earnings on other Star and MP carriers will still be distance based. A big disincentive for international passengers to choose UA. I don't see the logic behind this. |

IMO, this is how FF programs should have been in the first place. It only makes sense that higher yielding passengers be rewarded more than those buying rock bottom fares, and based on my analysis for both the DL and UA programs, the only people that are truly hurt by this are the ones buying rock bottom fares. _________________ http://openflights.org/user/akumanduri |

Hmm - this will definitely impact my award mile earning on United, so I typically end up buying $1500 BLR-IAH tickets, of which about $300 might end up as the tax component. Will have to stick to buying on LH stock instead of choosing UA stock. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Expected, though still rather unfortunate. The strategy has to be buy UA stock on fares >20c/mile (or at least until you reach the minimum spend for your desired status), and then buy LH / other JV metal stock tickets for the rest. For those with mix of business and personal travel, one can actually come out ahead.
Makes life a bit more complicated, but you had to expect this as UA for a while now has been suffering from 'DL envy'; in fact the only thing that surprises me is that they have not yet bought themselves a refinery. |

For those living outside US, this recent change does not impact much. The minimum spend is not applicable to those living outside US. All they have to meet is the 4 segment requirement on UA, which was there all along. After meeting the 4 segments, best is to fly other Star carriers and avoid UA as much as possible, except in certain circumstances. |

Absolutely - but the bummer would be when UA reduces earning on the lower LH Y fares (to match LH's own earning of 25% - 50% - 75% for fare buckets in Y) - in that case it might be adieu to *A - as there's no hope to maintain *G status. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |
