I was asking a rhetorical question (making a point about the validity of these referendums) no one expects there to be one
Sticky issue tho- balance between what local people want and what the country wants. Still, Putins got balls to do what he did. He is one scary person
Great information by the way. _________________ eP007 |

Read yesterday that Ukraine has withdrawn it's armed forces from Crimea. Why would they do that - won't this reduce their claim on the region? Or is Crimea now a full part of Russia - and Ukraine recognizes this? _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

I always feel he has a plan of resurrecting grand-old Soviet Union somewhere at the back of his mind. |
But he is going to fail like it did for Stalin's old Soviet Union era. We might see another fragmented Russia.
Lot of people who want more freedom and mainly the homosexuals would be happy to see a Russia without Putin as a President. _________________ www.flickr.com/G-BYGB photos |

Many Russians both inside and out in the west believe that Putin is the reincarnated Peter the Great. I think US style democracy will never take root in Russia. _________________ Sabya99 |

Food for thought, Putin has been their best President. Steered newly created Russia away from the hype, hoopla and consequent downfall of Boris Yelstin and super-charged their economic growth at the turn of the millennium and since.

^^ How much of this growth has been due to the rising energy prices (which Russia exports in droves)? Vs. "real" growth? _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Played a part for sure, but Putin's administration have to be given credit for reviving other sectors of the economy as well. _________________ Yeah. |

Also not to forget, he kept in check the oligarchs (Berezovsky/ Khodorkovsky/Gusinsky and many others) who were stealing in billions from state coffer during Yeltsin time.
He had a very efficient Finance Minister (Mr. Kudrin) in his first term and oil price definitely helped. _________________ Tally Sheet:
