...he said, adding that it was also "gracefully retiring" four aged DC-10s, one of which would go to a US aviation museum.

Indeed! Thanks for sharing this with us, Jishnu. Did the writer get better access since he was an industry insider? I have heard some mixed reviews of BG from friends who have flown it: the `no-pictures' enforcement, and some rough behaviour at times, but good food, most of the while.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Biman officially outlines its DC-10 phase-out plans

12NOV2013

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has officially outlined its planned DC-10-30 phase out schedule. According to the Bangladeshi carrier, its second-to-last DC-10 (registration unspecified) was retired from service on November 10 and is to be scrapped at Dhaka. Its last trijet will continue normal flying until December 7, 2013 when the airline's revised "fog period" schedule comes into force. "Thereafter, it will only be used as a standby aircraft, in case another aircraft in our fleet become unserviceable for any reason. We will not be scheduling it on any route though," Biman said. This last DC10 will continue operating as a standby aircraft until sometime in February 2014. The exact date is not yet known as it is being coordinated with the arrival of a brand new B777-300(ER) aircraft from Boeing. An exact date for the airline's last flight - Dhaka to Birmingham Int'l with a possible US sector included - is expected by early January 2014. The aircraft will thereafter be donated to a museum in the United States.

http://www.biman-airlines.com/about/news?id=46e17663-312b-46ba-93d6-3d7e508f36b8

Dear Customer,

There has been a lot of interest lately from press, aviation enthusiasts and the general public, on what will be happening with Biman’s last DC10s, which will be phased out in the coming months with the arrival of new aircraft. These are the last flying passenger DC10-30 aircraft in the whole world. So I thought I would take this opportunity to brief you with the latest news, which will be updated when further firm news becomes available.

Biman currently has one DC10-30 flying. As its fuel consumption is higher than other aircraft in our fleet, it is used sparingly. One of the last DC10s came to the end of its economic life on 10th November 2013 and will be scrapped locally. This other last DC10 will continue normal flying until 08 February 2014, when our latest 777-300ER comes into service after arriving straight from Boeing in Seattle.

This last DC10 will continue flying on these final few flights to the Middle East and Hong Kong, until approximately 08 February, when it is grounded, replaced by a brand new 777-300 and it will only be used as a back-up.

The last DC10 is being donated to an Aviation Museum in either the USA or in the EU. A fitting end for an aircraft that has served Biman loyally over many years! Accordingly, we will then offer for sale, as a last opportunity to travel on a passenger DC10, anywhere in the world:

a. Seats on a last flight Dhaka to Birmingham (UK) will leave on Thursday, Feb 20 with an 0830 departure and a technical stop in Kuwait. It’s estimated that the aircraft will arrive in Birmingham around 1600 on the same day. This flight will go live for sale on Tuesday, Jan 14 and you can book it via our website using the special fares being offered.

b. One hour ‘fscenic tours’ to/from Birmingham on Sat, Feb 22, Sunday, the 23rd and Monday the 24th at 0900, 1200 and 1500 hours. Also on Tuesday, Jan 14, these flights will be bookable on our website. For the absolutely last DC10 flight to be operated on, Monday the 24th at 1500, Ian Allen Travel of the UK will also be selling tickets on their website

c. We will also be selling various DC10 and F28 memorabilia at Birmingham closer in.

Scenic tour Tickets for the last passenger flight will only be sold via ourselves on our website or with our partner - Ian Allan Travel whose website is at www.ianallantravel.com. This website will be updated by January 10th, 2014 with all the details on the flight times and how to book, we will provide additional info on our own website about these DC10 flights by Tuesday, Jan. 14th. . So do not buy tickets elsewhere; we want these tickets to go to genuine aviation enthusiasts!

While we recognize that it is time for the very latest in new aircraft and technology we are excited by the reaction to our operating these last flights of the DC10. We look forward to seeing you on one of the flights!

Best regards,

Kevin Steele

MD & CEO

"It's a fitting end for an aircraft that has served Biman loyally and well over many years."

DC-10 Final Flight

Dhaka to Birmingham (UK)

Dear Customer,

This is an exciting time for us here at Biman Bangladesh Airlines. We are preparing to take delivery of two brand new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft that will fly non-stop from Seattle to Dhaka. But it’s also a bittersweet time as we announce the details of the final passenger flights of our Douglas DC-10 aircraft. Retirement is an emotional time for anyone and no less for us, as we prepare for the withdrawal from service of not only our last DC-10, but the world’s last operational passenger DC-10. Having flown the skies since 1971, 446 DC10s were built and this aircraft was one of the last to come off the Long Beach, California production line in 1988.

Airlines quietly pull older aircraft from service every day and generally are never seen again. However, as a lover of aviation, l think this retirement is something special and deserves a more fitting send-off to an aviation museum. Therefore today, Biman is honoured to announce the farewell journey of this workhouse of our fleet and what an exciting send-off it will be!

On, or about Feb 14th, this three-engine wide-body will be withdrawn from scheduled service and prepped by engineering for its final flights. The last commercial flight will be on Thursday, Feb 20 when flight BG1015 takes to the skies at 0830 from Dhaka enroute to Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Operating via Kuwait this flight will arrive in Birmingham the same day at 1620. Priced at only ₤ 600 (plus taxes) for a window seat or ₤ 500 plus taxes, for all the other seats, we have kept the pricing at minimal levels to ensure the flight is accessible to as many as possible.

But this is not its final operation. Due to an overwhelming response from aviation enthusiasts from around the world, we are going to operate scenic flights on the weekend of Feb 22, 23 and 24 from Birmingham airport. The first flights to go on sale will operate on the Monday, Feb 24th at 0900, 1200 and 1500 with a block time of an estimated one-hour. If as expected, they sell out quickly we open up the Sunday, Feb 23rd flights up for the same times of 0900, 1200 and 1500. As these sell out then we will open up the Saturday flights also at the same times – 0900, 1200 and 1500. As with the last commercial flight from Dhaka, we are keeping the prices for these scenic flights at reasonable levels with prices of ₤150 for a window seat and ₤100 for an aisle seat. Please note that for the last commercial flight ever on Monday Feb 24 @ 1500, prices have been set slightly higher at ₤200/₤150. In order to keep the flights as “special” as possible we are only selling 152 of the 319 seats on the aircraft – therefore all are window or aisle seats.

We want to make sure these flights only sold to aviation enthusiasts and not to 3rd parties or wholesalers, so you must book on-line at www.biman-airlines.com. For the last commercial flight ever, on Feb 24 @ 1500, we have teamed up with Ian Allan travel in the UK at www.ianallantravel.com/aviationtours/ who will also sell tickets.

Please join me in wishing a fond farewell to the world’s last passenger DC10 in service as she prepares to go on show at an aviation museum.

Yours truly,

Kevin Steele, MD

http://www.thedailystar.net/bimans-highly-costly-goodbye-to-dc-10-12316

Biman's highly costly goodbye to DC-10

February 21, 2014

The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 of Biman yesterday left for Birmingham to operate scenic tours for aviation enthusiasts there but insiders say that the farewell for the last passenger-carrying workhorse could cost Biman dearly.

The DC-10 left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport yesterday morning and it would take 13 hours to reach its destination with a stopover at Kuwait. It will then make nine scenic tours around Birmingham over three days and return direct to Dhaka empty.

Biman insiders claimed that the roundtrip, excluding the scenic tours, would alone cost around Tk 2.33 crore and there were only 29 fare paying passengers onboard the flight to England and Biman would get only Tk 32 lakh in revenue.

Biman could get about Tk 2 crore if all 144 seats in each of the scenic tour flights are sold out but it would cost Tk 91 lakh excluding airport charges which could run into lakhs, said Biman officials requesting anonymity.

When contacted via email, Biman Bangladesh Airlines Managing Director Kevin Steele, however, said, “The scenic flights are very profitable.”

Biman sources claimed that Steele unilaterally made the decision to fly the DC-10 to Birmingham even though many top officials were against the idea.

Even though the last passenger-carrying flight of the DC-10 did not get high number of passengers, some enthusiasts came to Dhaka from as far as the USA and the UK to be on the flight to Birmingham.

“I was waiting for this moment and now I am here to be a part of the history,” said Seth Miller who came all the way from the USA.

Another passenger, who came to Dhaka for the first time from Birmingham just to fly back on the DC-10, said, “I am happy to be a part of this historical moment.”

He claimed that 100,000 people would be waiting in Birmingham to see the scenic flights and a few thousand lucky would make the flights.

The DC-10 joined Biman's fleet in August 1983. It had been the backbone of the fleet for nearly a quarter of a century. At one point, Biman had six of these planes.

Biman MD Steele said the DC-10 would not go to any museum as said before and it would be sold as scrap once it returns. Only a handful of DC-10s are now in service and all of them are cargo carrying.
