Pawan Hans is reportedly exploring plans to expand into the fixed-wing market, say BBC Asia.
Pawan is considering buying or leasing 20-seat Dornier aircraft, presumably Do228s. Plans are in an advanced stage, and reports says that Pawan may be the third element in the IA-AI merger plan --- to get passengers from every corner even using helicopters.

The diea was first raised with Pawan Hans by the administration of the Andeman and Nicobar islands, asking them to consider a turn-key operation with two aircraft, says BBC.
Pawan already fly two Eurocopter Dauphin helicopters in the area, but they are apparently too expensive and not large enough for the plans that the islands' administration is looking for, says the report.

This was a niche that was once planned to be fille dby Vayudoot: until Mr.HarshVardhan got too ambitious!!

Air Deccan could have very profitably filled this niche untl Gopinathan got too ambiitious and went out looking for A320's!

PH can do a marvellous job I am sure: the market is there. How they tap it remains to be seen.

If PH uses Bombay, will it use the Sahar/Santacruz airport or the Juhu one.

OK, you heard it here first - PawanHans will likely be running the cargo cum passenger air business for Bihar, and Jharkhand, to start with.

And before the urban lot here starts off again - do look at the numbers on air-conditioned trains in and out of Bihar as well as the amount of agri-procude moving from Bihar to the rest of the country - especially the North East - lately.

There are over 60 air-strips in Bihar which are ready to receive these aircraft, and the State Government support is overwhelming. All this in a State where the road connectivity is terrible.

In addition, please look at the flow from Japan and other Buddhist countries into Bihar lately.

1) What has an IAF fighter base have to do with air-strips for commercial usage?

2) Bihar was the most industrialised state in India, at Independence, and that is a documented fact. The State is dotted with airstrips, still under the control of the CAD, which are being revived even as I type this out.

3) Pune has a fighter base, it also has three other air-strips within a 30 km radius, but many people in Pune would not know about this. Likewise in Bihar, where even small back of beyond towns like Monghyr/Munger have air-strips, right next to another one in Jamalpur.

Pawan Hans has been asked to double its fleet and also look at new aircraft like sea-planes, says a UNI report, quoting MoCA Praful Patel.
One of the major responsibilities of the PHHL is to operate to the off-shore installations of ONGC, which could be serviced also through sea-planes.
The company has also been asked to seriously complement the operations of the merged Air India/IA and Air India Express/Alliance.
