Lufthansa could hold informal talks with Emirates over possible aliance
News
19-Nov-2013 2:46 PM
Lufthansa VP Southern Europe and Middle East Carsten Schaeffer said the carrier could hold informal talks with Emirates at the Dubai Air Show over a possible alliance, but noted that any tie-up would have to be a "win-win" for both parties (Arabian Business, 18-Nov-2013). However, he said no announcement on the matter was imminent. He said, "We're always open for discussions but it has to be a win-win for everybody...There's a lot of coffee being had here somewhere. We might be competitors but we continue to talk. We know its a smart group of executives, and they will use the opportunity to talk but there's nothing tangible to announce at this point....They're fast growing and they're capturing a lot of the new markets".

This is not going anywhere IMHO - as LH will not budge for EK, and EK does not really need LH - they need access to the German market, not through LH though.

A tie up with LH can help EK open up numerous destinations in the EU, UK and even the US, without having to operate its own metal everywhere. It is the same thing that EY has done with Air Berlin.

LH in return, can withdraw some of its loss-making routes in the Middle East or Australasia, and funnel its pax via DXB.

I don't think this is feasible. If it's going to be a 2 stop flight (one stop in DXB, and one somewhere in Germany), it completely takes away from EK's operating model. What they want to do is to operate non-Stops from DXB to every village and taluka in Europe (where there's demand), so they can offer a one-stop via DXB to anywhere in the world.

LH does not even fly to Oz from what I know. LH considers it's hubs the center of the universe. They don't want to become a feed to another hub in the middle east.
