So what this about a new airport at Chakan near Pune? Anyone heard of this? Is it real or just talk like and will go the way of the BLR airport - being ready eventually in 2026... twenty years after they first siad they were going to do it. |

Hey MEL, I've seen the CSIA master plan presentation - which I've been unsuccessful in uploading an image from to this site here
The plan keeps the cross runways as they were unable to procure already built up land from the AAI/ AI/ IC residential colonies that are already well built up behind the present AI hangars. The original plan did have two parallel runways, but the required separation distance for operation of parallel runways meant this plan was scuttled. The final master plan approved by DEL/ MOCA apparently still has the two present runways crossing, albeit upgraded with numerous high speed exit taxiways in both directions and significant high tech investment to allow simultaeneous operations.
The new common terminal will be built at Sahar. It resembles a peacock feather (as shown on the CSIA website) and will have three fingers - one left, the other right. The central finger extends to a smaller annex terminal which will be located where the present outer bay parking has been newly constructed for domestic A/C (where the 9W 777 was parked for a few days adjacent to runway 27). The access to this annex is pretty dramatic, they have included an elevated glass walkway bridge with walkalators on two levels, high enough to allow A320/ 737 aircraft to taxi underneath it.
The third (left hand) finger will only be built after 2011. Domestic arrivals departures will use a separate level airside, allowing for international and domestic A/C to be parked side by side seamlessly and yet securely. The present Santa Cruz terminal will then become a cargo hub.
They were supposed to start work on the annex terminal by now, according to the project plan, but runway extensions are on the critical path - hence the delay. With the SC ruling yesterday to the MH governemnt, the pace should hopefully pick up. |

It is not Chakan or for that matter any other airport in India. If you observe this picture closely, you will notice that the dark blue car is joining the lane on the right hand side. In India it would have entered on the left hand side. The blue van is being driven on the right hand side lane.
