Belgrade accepts Etihad's Jat offer; to be rebranded as "Air Serbia"
05JUL2013
Jat Airways is set to be taken over by Etihad Airways after Belgrade accepted the Emirati-carrier's offer. The announcement was made by Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić. According to Serbian daily “Večernje novosti”, with a takeover agreement in place, Etihad could take control of Jat as early as August 1 with a rebranding to Air Serbia due on October 27. Meanwhile, EX-YU Aviation News states that the new Etihad-appointed CEO of Jat, part of a three-man delegation, has arrived in Belgrade and has already conducted various talks with government and airline departments. Air Serbia will serve as a successor to Jat, as opposed to a new company, thereby inheriting all its routes, assets, rights and debts, though this does mean the demise of the Jat brand after 66 years in existence.

No more Jat Airways, Air Serbia is coming, says Deputy PM Vucic
04.07.2013
The First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic has confirmed that Jat Airways is just one step from signing strategic partnership with Etihad.
“I have a good news for Serbia. I expect we will solve the problem of Jat Airways in the next period and that the contract with Etihad will be signed,” Vucic said.
“The rebranding will happen, so we will be able to be proud of Air Serbia, which will incomparably more successful and better than Jat Airways in every way. It is also hard to think of a better name than this one, because name of Serbia will be presented on all continents.”

I think a lot of people do that, hence the name change
or it could be that EY is behind it. They are also planning to pick up a stake in Jat (Air Serbia), and didn't want their two underlings to have similar names _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).
