Two pilots of British airliner fall asleep on long-haul flight: Report
Quote: | LONDON: Two pilots on a British airliner on a long-haul flight fell asleep in the cockpit, leaving the packed jet travelling unsupervised on autopilot, Britain's Sun newspaper reported on Thursday.
One of the pilots on board the Airbus 330 flight to Britain — the name of the airline was not disclosed — eventually woke up and roused his colleague, but neither knew how long they had been asleep, the paper said.
The flight took off on August 13 and the pilot and co-pilot took turns to have 20-minute rests but, after flying for more than an hour, they both dropped off.
They reported the incident themselves to Britain's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), blaming longer shifts during the summer holiday period. The Sun said it had seen a copy of their report.
The CAA said it was legally prevented from disclosing any details about companies or individuals who filed mandatory occurrence reports to them.
"Fatigue is a serious issue and needs careful oversight, which is why we welcome new EU proposals to give regulators greater powers to oversee airlines' fatigue risk management systems and data," a CAA spokesman said.
"The UK has an excellent safety record, but we are constantly striving to improve air safety." |
Could this be VS? or any charter airline (Mytravel, Monarch, thomas cook etc all of which operate 330) |

If the IFE relayed what the pilots were doing in one of its channels, wont the passengers be more than happy to wake the pilots up ? |

If we can see the view outside from a tail-mounted camera or NLG mounted camera in the IFE, can't we see what the pilots are doing using a dashboard mounted camera in the cockpit ??
If it is facing the pilots there may not even be any security breach, would it be ?? |

There's no reason for the pax to see what is going on in the cockpit
[cockpit cameras are a long way away- and that's for the black box.] _________________ eP007 |

Definitely useful for the black box!
When the pax can hear the ATC communication, why not be able to see what's going on in the cockpit? What is fundamentally secret about the cockpit activities? _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Excellent point there, Nimish!!

Is that because pilots may be entertaining an actress or having a good time with an air-hostess and that may be viewed by an under 18 through the IFE ??
We can have a 'I am over 18' check box in that case |
